Hi everyone,

I am very new to this, so bear with me!

I have a 2015 Citroen C4 Grand Picasso 1.6Hdi, and am looking at entering into the world of caravanning, I need a 5 berth caravan, but I am not sure exactly what weight I can tow - can someone explain in simple terms for me?

Thank you

Hi, and welcome. A 1.6 litre engine sounds a bit small for towing a 5 berth caravan. However, things have changed a lot over the years. I don't know the car but I'm sure some of our experts on here will know it.

First you need to find out the maximum towing weight for your car, which should be in the handbook. You also need to consider your driving licence if you passed your test fairly recently. You may already be aware of this but a car towing a large caravan may exceed the weight limit. Apologies if you are already aware, but some first time caravan owners don't realise that it is the combined weight of car and caravan that counts.

It is also recommended that the caravan should not exceed 85% of the car's weight, but this is only a recommendation, unlike the maximum towing weight which is a legal requirement.

Best Regards,
Colin

Welcome.

I've got a 2017 1.2l petrol version of the C4GP, and it's a nice stable tow car, BUT it's a surprisingly light car for it's size, therefore a 5 berth van that it can legally tow might be quite a challenge to find.

Kerb weights/towing limits vary with trim spec so I can't give you a specific figure, but it'll likely be circa 1300-1350Kg. If you are new to towing the guidance recommends you do not exceed 85% of the kerb weight of the towing vehicle for any trailer, so caravan MTPLM (Maximum Technically Permissible Laden Mass) shouldn't be more than 1100-1150Kg, which is quite light. My 4 berth Lunar which is considered a lightweight van has a MTPLM of 1310Kg and is just within limits of my car!

The car weights are on a label on NS door frame and max towing weight is also on your V5 registration document. You need to know the car towing limits before looking at caravans.

Once you know your towing limits, then easiest way to start picking a suitable van is 'Caravan Finder Web Site', using the filtered search to put in your particular criteria https://www.caravanfinder.co.uk/

Probably best to start there and then come back to forum with any further questions once you have some firm car/towing limit details we can work from.

Welcome to the minefield MdSmith! The answer to your question is neither simple nor short, but the below is correct to the best of my knowledge.

Start out by looking at the VIN plate on your car, which should either be inside the engine bay or on the B pillar behind one of the front doors. This should have two weights on it. The first is the maximum permissible weight of the car when fully loaded. The second is the 'gross train weight' which is maximum permissible weight of the car and a trailer combined (irrespective of whether the trailer is also loaded to its limit). The difference between the two is the car's towing limit, as specified by the manufacturer.

Let's say for simplicity that the car's maximum permissible weight was 2000kg, and the gross train weight was 3000kg. This would allow you to tow a caravan (or any type of trailer) weighing 1000kg. If the caravan's 'maximum technically permissible laden mass' (MTPLM) was 1100kg, you could still legally tow it provided that its actual weight was 1000kg or less.

I'm afraid it gets more complicated. The towing limits for many cars are well in excess of the weights of the cars themselves, and this is because they're (a) determined using trailers and not high-sided caravans, and (b) set by the manufactuers based on the weight that the car can physically move from a standstill on repeated hill starts. They have nothing whatever to do with what the car will comfortably cope with on the road.

The caravanning industry recognises that caravans, being high-sided, are inherently less stable than most other types of trailer, and also tend to be towed at higher speeds for longer distances. They therefore recommend - but it is only a recommendation - that the actual weight of a caravan should not exceed the car's kerb weight (essentially the unladen weight. If you can't find a value for kerb weight, 'mass in service' is close enough) even if the towing limit permits it. It's also widely advised that those new to towing should not tow more than 85% of the kerb weight, but this is crude at best and arbitrary at worst. It's certainly not the case that 84% is a guaranteed safe match but that at 86%, or even 90%+, stability problems are inevitable.

There's another complication if you got your full licence after 1997 and only have 'Category B' entitlement. In this case the maximum permissible weights of the car and the MTPLM of the trailer (note: NOT the actual weight this time) combined cannot legally exceed 3500kg.

This means that you might be able to tow a caravan with a Ford Focus and stay within the law, but to tow the same caravan with a Land Rover Discovery would be illegal. You might think that this is madness and I would have to agree, but it's what the law says. You can overcome it by taking an extended test to get 'Category B+E entitlement.

That's part of the story. We need the Gross Train weight or GTW.
Is there a label inside the drivers door pillar with 4 weights on it? That should give the GTW.

GTW is the maximum weight of the actually loaded car and caravan.

What this means is that you can legally tow 1500kg (subject to your driving licence) but only if the combination are within the car's GTW.

I'd be surprised if GTW wasn't maximum permissible car weight (2175kg) + maximum towing limit (1500kg) = 3675kg. I suppose in theory a manufacturer could report a higher towing limit, calculated on the assumption that the car wasn't fully loaded but I don't think I've come across a case of this having been done for a car. Maybe for a commercial vehicle.

However, if the GTW is lower then you should reduce the weight of the caravan accordingly (for example if GTW was only 3600kg then the maximum your caravan could actually weigh when towed would be 1425kg).

However, going by the caravanning clubs' recommendations, the actual weight of your caravan should also be less than the mass in service of the car (1422kg) even if the legal towing limit is higher.

Also note that if you have a post-1997 'Category B' licence, the MTPLM of your caravan cannot legally exceed 1325kg (being 3500kg-2175kg).

I hope this makes sense!
