Hi all

After LOTS of digging around and comparisons on various tow match websites I have found the following combination, which appears to suit my license category, family size, and towing limits etc..

Ford Focus 2.0 Tdci Zetec 5dr Estate 5dr 2011 - 2013
Bailey 2014 Pursuit 540-5

Does anyone here tow with a Ford Focus 2013 model 2.0 diesel?

I would also be grateful for your views on the stats below.

I have previously towed a caravan with a Ford Focus 2.0 Tdci Zetec 5dr Estate which was a 2007 model but the 2011-2013 model has the same identical diesel engine with 136 BHP and torque specification. In terms of pulling power you won't be disappointed as the car has plenty of torque which is superb for both hill starts and motorway inclines etc. The figures you have quoted above are correct and accurate in respect of the vehicle's kerb weight, towball weight limit of 75kgs. and the percentage match as well so should be fine with the caravan specifications. However, because of the low towball weight limit you will most likely have to fiddle about getting the noseweight right on the caravan which I had to do and still have to with my current Volvo. In all fairness, the only reason I changed from the Focus to a Volvo V50 (which is actually built on a Focus chassis) is that the dashboard illumination had no control over the brightness which was a distraction at night and quite dazzling too which I considered to be a hazard to say the least. The rear luggage compartment was bigger on the Focus than the V50 which was beneficial for carrying extra equipment but sometimes it's swing and roundabouts when it comes to choice.

The Focus 2.0 Tdci has a six speed gearbox and is absolutely beneficial when driving solo because on the motorway you can achieve between 55-60 mpg. driven carefully. However, I found that using the 6th gear towing the caravan put a little too much strain on the gearbox so from experience I would advise to stay in 5th gear at a max. of 60 mph.

I did quite a bit of testing with a 2L MK3 Mondeo and that was also more fuel efficient in 5th than 60th at 60mph.

I did the same runs over and over to make sure it was accurate and not just luck with the traffic flow etc.

Also did runs on a 40mph dual carriageway. The car pulled 5th gear fine at 40mph and you would think that was the perfect gear.

I noticed it actually used more fuel in 5th than in 4th. That puzzled me lower revs = less fuel (right)? So I did the same runs with an OBD tool attached and logged everything.

40mph in 4th gear the throttle was only at 9%, changing upto 5th you needed to apply 18% throttle to maintain the speed. Seems the torque at just 9% throttle in 5th was not enough to maintain 40mph.

Changing upto 5th required more throttle movement with an increase the amount of fuel injected.

I towed in 5th unless on a long downward gradient when i would change upto 6th.
