Hi
Need a bit of help trying to work out if I can legally tow my caravan( Adrian adora 612 up, maximum permissible weight of1700kg) With a recently bought 2lt Skoda superb se L Executive TDI. Looking in my logbook and it states a “ max permissible mass “ of 2109( same as “ revenue weight,“ 2109kg) my confusion is it also says in the logbook that “ mass in service is 1520 presumably kilos?? So can anyone help me work out A- will I be able to to my van? And B- will I be legal??
Thanks in advance for any help
Regards all
Dave

The mass in service is the kerbweight of the car, your caravan should have an MTPLM lower than the kerbweight of the car so this outfit would not be suitable, as a novice the 85% guideline would be a good starting point. You also need to check the max towing weight of the car which will be in the V5 and the handbook.

You will also need a B+E driving licence for this as you will be over 3500kg gross train weight.

Hi Rob
Thanks for your message. Just checked my licence and I do have B+E, max towing weight is the 2120kg I mentioned, does that make any difference?
Thanks
Dave

I'm by no means certain but I think the most likely relevant figure for your car is 1520kg, which would mean that the caravan would be heavier than the car. If that is the case, it would not be a suitable tow car for a van of that weight. I'd be surprised if your Skoda weighs more than 2 tonnes.

You didn't mention a max tow of 2120kg so I didn't mention it. However the max tow weight is only the max trailer weight the car can tow to manage a hill start on a certain gradient, it is not the maximum weight caravan that you can tow safely at motorway speeds with passing traffic, sidewinds etc. The MTPLM of the caravan should not exceed the kerbweight of the car and ideally the caravan should be as light as possible to give the largest safety margin possible, hence the 85% guideline.

If you check the weight plate on the car and subtract the max weight of the car from the gross train weight you may find that you can not tow 2120 if the car is loaded so you need to check the plate as well.

You need a heavier car or a lighter caravan.

Rob

PS Some insurance policies and breakdown services will not cover you if you are towing over 100% of the kerbweight so might be worth checking your small print as well.

Towcarinfo does not use UK spec car weights and guesses the weights so it will give you a rough idea but you really need to check the details of your particular car and caravan before towing.

Example: My Skoda Octavia Estate 4x4 2.0Tdi mass in service is 1,495kg (V5C) or has the handbook states 'unladen weight ready for work'! My caravan has a mtplm of 1,318 kg with a tow ratio of 88%, to tow safely keep the tow ratio below 100%. The good thing is, the engine does have a good torque level.

But it's not accurate for UK vehicles.

Hi Dave

Short answer: yes, you can legally tow that caravan with that car but bodies such as the two main caravanning clubs, as well as myself and probably most other users of this forum would not recommend it.

Long answer: of the weights you mention, the "mass in service" is the weight of the car as it left the factory. The "maximum permissible mass" is just that - the maximum permissible weight of the car itself fully loaded. The VIN plate will have a further figure called something like "gross train weight" (which will probably be somewhere in the region of 4000kg). Subtract the maximum permissible mass from this to give the maximum towing limit.

For the Skoda Superb 2.0 TDI, I'm fairly sure that the maximum towing limits are 1800kg for pre-2015 cars and 2000kg from 2015-on (because they're the same as the VW Passat that the Superb is based on).

Provided that your driving licence permits it (and you have said that yours does), you can legally tow any trailer of actual weight (note: not necessarily MTPLM) up to the car's maximum towing limit.

The trouble is that, as Rob says, the towing limits are (a) set using trailers and not high-sided caravans and (b) determined based on the weight of a trailer that the car can physically move from a standstill on a repeated hill start. They have nothing whatever to do with what the car will comfortably cope with in real life conditions, including motorways.

The caravanning industry recognises this, and also that caravans (being long, high-sided and often single axle) are inherently less stable than most other types of trailer, as well as typically being towed for longer distances and at much higher speeds. They therefore recommend that the maximum weight of a caravan should not exceed the car's kerb weight (essentially the mass in service plus an allowance for the weight of the driver). For novice towers, the recommendation is that the weight of the caravan should not be more than about 85% of the car's kerb weight, but this is crude and somewhat arbitrary.

Bottom line: if I was to use your Skoda to tow an agricultural trailer, at low speeds for a few miles to the nearest farm, I would not be at all concerned at it weighing 1700kg. But for a caravan, being towed on motorways across, or even out of the UK, I would not be comfortable towing more than 1500kg.

To comfortably tow a 1700kg caravan you're probably looking at a large 4x4 such as Hyundai Santa Fe or its Kia equivalent (I think that's the Sorrento but not certain), Volvo XC60 or Land Rover Discovery etc.

Hi
Thanks for you detailed info above, you all confirmed what I think I already knew but glad people are out there to help out👍 Pretty sure I’ve solved my deleted now, about to by a VW Touareg!! Looked at the log book Before I commit and it has a “ kerb weight “of 2120kg. Its been an interesting learning curve that I don’t think will be forgotten about any time soon.
Again thank You all for your input and help
Take care
Regards
Dave

Touaregs are a brilliant tow car and will be a much better match for your Adria.

Just out of interest, what did you tow the Adria with before you had the Skoda?
