Hello everyone,

Just after some advice. I have a Volvo V40 D2 1.6, which I think has a kerbweight of 1300 although possibly 1342. Not sure.

I have the opportunity to try out an immaculate bailey paegant majestic 2001.

Unsure whether my car would possible.

Any help wupuld be great
this though. I noticed two weights, one says 1001kg and the other was 1216kg (I believe). I'm guessing the latter is MTLPM so not sure whether this is possible.

Any advice or help would be great

Is it a 1.6 petrol or diesel?

I have looked at the specifications for the Volvo V40 diesel (D2) and the kerbweight is 1257 kgs. so the two figures you provided for the caravan, the higher of the two will be the MTPLM which you said is quite correct. Doing a percentage calculation for the match equals almost 97% which I have towed with a Ford Focus 1.6 diesel estate with a BHP of about the same value with a caravan about the same weight and match which is fine on the flat but can struggle on hill starts and steep inclines. That's why I changed from the Focus to a Volvo V50 because the match now and with a bigger engine works out to 83%.

Update: I used towsafe which stated that my cars kerbweight was 1471kg and a maximum towing capacity of 1300.
The caravans mtlpm is 1218kg. So I'm thinking this would be OK but I would need to take it easy. Not really sure about all the figures though.

Any advice

If those figures are correct then the match would be 83% which is fine which I found the same details online for the Volvo V40 but was for a different version to the D2 engine so weights can vary. However, you need to be cautious using online towing data because sometimes they are not that accurate so best to double check with a Volvo dealer to obtain the correct figures just to be on the safe side. The figures for my Volvo are in the original handbook so can do my own percentage calculation for accurate results.

Thanks for your response. Having looked on my V5 it says the weight is 1471, which I'm assuming is kerbweight. It says that I have towing capacity of 1300. So does mean I can have 85% of the 1300 or 85% of 1471 as long as its under 1300?

It's 85% of kerbweight as long as it's under the max tow weight. The 85% is only a guideline, 86% won't be a problem but keep your weight down as much as possible.

The weight of 1471kg will be either kerb weight or mass in service, which is the weight of the car as it left the factory. Kerb weight includes an allowance for the weight of the driver so is normally slightly higher, but either way 1471kg sounds about right.

The 85% ratio is a crude recommendation based on stability, and is applicable to caravans only. Based on the details you have supplied, if your caravan was fully loaded the ratio would be 1216/1471 * 100, = 82.6%, indicating no cause for concern provided that the caravan is sensibly loaded.

The towing limit (which you have stated to be 1300kg) is arguably of greater importance than the 85% ratio, because you cannot legally tow more than that. Note also that the towing limit is calculated based on the weight that the car can move from a standstill on repeated hill starts. It may therefore be well in excess of the kerb weight particularly if the car is reasonably powerful. However, put simply, the closer you get to the towing limit, the harder the car will have to work.

Judging performance is obviously subjective, but given that the fully loaded weight of your caravan is only 84kg less than the car's towing limit (basically, the equivalent of an extra full-sized adult in the car) I suspect you'll be looking at doing most motorway driving in 5th gear rather than 6th with a fair bit of changing down for uphill sections. That should be fine for short-ish journeys, but if you planned to tow from, say, the Midlands to the Scottish Highlands or the French Alps, you'd probably wish you had something with a bit more power and torque.
