Hi to everyone,

This is my very first post so be gentle...lol. We owned a caravan many years ago, so have some experience in towing. ( Towed with a Hilux Surf 4x4) Over the past few years we decided to camp and bought air tent, air porch etc... and thoroughly enjoyed it......but being in our mid fifties, we're looking for that little bit of comfort again..lol. This is the dilemma!. We now own a 2007 Mazda CX-7 2.3 Turbo, Petrol, Manual Gearbox, its an automatic 4x4 ( it switches to 4x4 mode automatically). It has 260 BHP.

We're looking at a 2006/07 Bailey Senator Wyoming or similar, as we like the idea of a fixed bed and separate shower. The specs suggest this car cannot tow this type of caravan?. The kerb weight of the Mazda is 1690 ( Mass in service from V5 ). I've looked at the specs of the Wyoming and it states,

MRO (kg)1454
MTPLM (kg)1714

Now I fully understand that the MTPLM is the maxiumum laden weight of the caravan and the MRO is the unladen weight or factory weight. I've also read that caravans up to 2010 did not have to include gas bottles, water, liquids in their MRO. So, in retrospect, if the van is only laden with the essentials....bottles, toilet etc..., it would "weigh" 1454kg. We will only be going very short distances from our intended storage place and will take most of what we need in the car. With all this in mind, do you see any problem towing with the CX-7. I really don't want to have to buy another vehicle, as this one suits our purpose and I have a towball fitted for our small trailer ( carries the tent ). The CX-7 2.2 Diesel is exactly the same vehicle albeit a diesel instead but apparently the kerb weight is higher.

So sorry for the long post, but I thought it best to give all the information where possible and people could advise accordingly.

Thanks for any help/advice
Paul

Hi Paul, welcome to the forum. It's a breath of fresh air when someone quotes the weights for us to work with, but what is the maximum tow weight of the car which should be on the V5 and do you have B+E on your licence but it looks like you might be on very dodgy ground.

Hi Tina, thank you.
The V5 states Maximum towing 1450 and I passed my test well before January '97.

Thanks Paul

Using this website it states I can tow everything but the 2006/2007 model ??

Remember to check you have the right tow ball.

If you look at this post and go to reply 5 from Tango click on the link and you will see the different tow balls.

Hi Paul, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, it is illegal to tow above the maximum towing limit of the car even by 4kgs, it isn't realistic to transfer everything from car to caravan and vice a versa even if you could tow it, looks like a heavier car or a lighter caravan as the caravan was the top of the range Bailey hence being a very heavy caravan. So if you are going to change the car you will be looking at a kerb weight of at least 1900 kgs. Sorry.

Tina

Hi Tina, no problem at all, thank you for your input. So, am I right in thinking. My kerb weight is 1690, therefore IF I had to go 100%, I could pull the Wyoming series, but not the 2006/2007. If you get the chance, could you input my details in the above website. That gives me a number of options to tow. Thanks Paul

no its more complicated than that, different manufacturers state max towing weights and often they have little to do with their kerb weights, if your car says 1500kgs max and your caravan states 1600kgs max loaded weight then you simply cant tow that caravan with that car

Paul, yes the kerb weight is 1690kgs but you still can't tow over the manufacturers 1450kg maximum tow weight, you need to look for a caravan that has max laden weight (mtplm) of 1450kgs or less. And you won't find a Senator with the layout you want within the max 1450kgs. Try a Bailey Pageant or Bailey Ranger you should find one of those in the weight range. Have a look at caravan finder.co.uk, very helpful in layouts and weights.

Thanks Tina, I'm really not understanding this maximum tow range when everywhere I look it states 80%, 85%, 100% of kerb weight ?
So, I would be better going for the diesel version ?

Towing Weight - Towing Capacity -
Mazda CX-7 (2007 - 2011) 2.2d Sport Tech 5d
UnbrakedMax 750kg   Braked 1800kg

Mazda CX-7 (2007 - 2011) 2.3T 5d UnbrakedMax 750kg Braked 1450kg

Ok let me try to explain, yes normally the recommended towing weight would be 85% of kerb weight up to 100% usually the 85% is for novice towers and to be safe up to 90% - 95% for experienced towers we would never tow at 100% but it isn't against the law. But because your car has a manufacturers max tow weight of 1450kgs this weight can never be exceeded.
It is possible the diesel might be better but again you will have to work the figures out including the max tow weight.

Paul just had a quick look at the diesel, it looks good and seems to have a max tow weight of 1800 which again is lower than the kerb weight, so with that Senator it would be about a 92% match which I recon is just perfect.

Thank you so much Tina, most appreciated. Looks like the cx7 will be up for sale to buy a cx7 (diesel)....lol. Its so strange that two identical models apart from the engine are so far apart on towing maximums.

Well, I did....but I still don't get which figure on a V5 you should adhere to.

Say for example it was any car...

Scenario 1 : The kerb weight is 1690

85% of 1690 is 1436
95% of 1690 is 1605

That would mean ( given whats written all over the net), a vehicle could tow a caravan upto 1690 (100%)

Scenario 2 : If that vehicle has maximum towing of say 1600 it still couldn't tow a 1605 van, but % to kerb says it can.

Therfore the kerb weight of any vehicle is irrelevant as is the calculation, if everything relies on the maximum towing figure alone ?

Do you see my point Tina

Very confusing....lol

Thanks again, Paul
