Hi to everyone,
This is my very first post so be gentle...lol. We owned a caravan many years ago, so have some experience in towing. ( Towed with a Hilux Surf 4x4) Over the past few years we decided to camp and bought air tent, air porch etc... and thoroughly enjoyed it......but being in our mid fifties, we're looking for that little bit of comfort again..lol. This is the dilemma!. We now own a 2007 Mazda CX-7 2.3 Turbo, Petrol, Manual Gearbox, its an automatic 4x4 ( it switches to 4x4 mode automatically). It has 260 BHP.
We're looking at a 2006/07 Bailey Senator Wyoming or similar, as we like the idea of a fixed bed and separate shower. The specs suggest this car cannot tow this type of caravan?. The kerb weight of the Mazda is 1690 ( Mass in service from V5 ). I've looked at the specs of the Wyoming and it states,
MRO (kg)1454
MTPLM (kg)1714
Now I fully understand that the MTPLM is the maxiumum laden weight of the caravan and the MRO is the unladen weight or factory weight. I've also read that caravans up to 2010 did not have to include gas bottles, water, liquids in their MRO. So, in retrospect, if the van is only laden with the essentials....bottles, toilet etc..., it would "weigh" 1454kg. We will only be going very short distances from our intended storage place and will take most of what we need in the car. With all this in mind, do you see any problem towing with the CX-7. I really don't want to have to buy another vehicle, as this one suits our purpose and I have a towball fitted for our small trailer ( carries the tent ). The CX-7 2.2 Diesel is exactly the same vehicle albeit a diesel instead but apparently the kerb weight is higher.
So sorry for the long post, but I thought it best to give all the information where possible and people could advise accordingly.
Thanks for any help/advice
Paul
