Paul, you need to look at the kerb weight and the max tow weight. The laden weight of your caravan should be less than the kerb weight,ideally 85% of kerb weight for a novice, however if the max tow weight of your car is less than this figure then you have to go by the LOWER figure.
You will find lots of advice on towing weights on caravan and motorhome club and camping and caravan club websites. A lot of cars have a max tow weight limit lower than 85% of kerb weight that is hence my first question was what is the max tow weight of your car.

Thank you Tina, that makes much more sense, but very worrying if a lot of people calculate what they are able to tow by the % to kerb ratio rather than the lower max towing figure.

I myself would probably have gone for the 95% of my kerb = 1605

It does make it confusing, as these sites clearly show its defined by percentage of kerb weight, and not a mention of max towing value

Yes Paul exactly and I am sure there are people looking at it the same way you were, but at least you checked, a lot don't. The next thing will be finding the max nose weight of the car, usually in the hand book also if you are going to get a towbar fitted get a fixed swan neck or fixed flange with an extended alko ball that way you can use it no matter what hitch type the caravan has.

I do like to cross the T's and dot the I's lol. Just want to make sure everything is correct. I've just fitted a detachable tow bar to my cx7 which I was going to take off and put on the diesel cx7 when I get one, but you say the swan neck may be better ?

If you already have a towbar that is transferable I would go with that if the towball is suitable for the hitch of the caravan. I only suggested the others as some detachables have a lower nose weight allowance.

i would check before removal that it could be reused on the diesel model, often daft little differences such as hole in the wrong place etc, if that was the case i wouldnt bother removing it and just use the money saved on labour to get the new one fitted

Just an update, and thanks for all the help. Pleased to say the petrol cx7 was put up for sale and sold the following morning on ebay. About a week later found a nice 60 plate 2.2 diesel cx-7, drove to Manchester from Essex to pick it up.......and guess what, fitted with a fixed towbar and 13 pin electrics. Time to look for our new...ish caravan, and checked the maximum braking... 1800kg ..Wooohooooo !!

Until you find another gotcha where some cars can have a fairly high loaded kerbweight and a fairly high tow weight.

But where you cannot do both at the same time.

I had a MK3 Mondeo estate. Max tow 1800kg

Max laden kerbweight 2040kg

Then you look at the maximum train weight which was only 3615kg and not the expected 3840kg.

You can load the car upto 2040kg but the max town is now only 1575kg. (figures are a best guess for example only), its been a while so dont count on those being 100% accurate.


And dont forget the axle loads also. Loading the boot with all that camping gear and hithing up a caravan could overload the rear axle yet be well below the cars gross weight.
