Hi I purchased the trailer attached in photos from gumtree. It is 2800x2000x2300mm and weighs no more than 150kg. It is unbraked with working lights and tows perfectly attached to my car. Being naive I bought without any paperwork as I've no experience towing/trailers etc... I have had it resprayed and am trying to make sure everything is proper and legal. I went to get it insured however I can't find a VIN number on the towing arm, underneath the chassis or any details in/outside the box itself. Any advice would be appreciated.. I've tried Vosa who passed me to DVLA who said it was not motorised and didn't know how to advise me. So if they don't have a clue what am I to do? Can I apply for a new VIN fot a trailer that size? Do I need a VIN and to register something so light and small? I don't know who to turn to it is really old and possibly homemade. Have I just made a massive error or is there any possible ways forward. If anymote information is needed to help let me know I'm at my witsend and feel like I've made a really expensive mistake. Thanks for any advice.
Small trailers are not registered in the UK. There must be thousands of small/modified/homemade trailers out there with no VIN plate but most people don't have separate insurance so they don't experience the problems you are having.
Thanks for your reply so I don't really need to get a VIN number. I do want it to be insured in case of theft or if I'm involved in an accident as all in it will have cost £3500-4000. Towing it I've been told the trailer only has 3rd party insurance. Main thing is I'm not breaking any laws driving it around with the VIN number.
Agree with the comments made by Rob above re registration.
One thing I would comment on however is the weight that the OP states. The 150kg may be the unladen weight, but you need to know the weight when you have fully loaded it, and the it's Maximum Allowed Weight. Those figures should have been given to you by the seller.
I suggest you find out who built it, as it is obviously professionally done and get in touch with them.
And I actually doubt the 150kgs looking at the photos.
Thanks LaniDavis. It's deceptive the ends are of a construction you can put your hand through and the sides and roof are 3mm tin. I can lift it of the the floor and push it up onto a small driveway on my own. All thats inside is a sink and nothing else.
There is no legal requirement to insure a trailer as far as I know. My caravan is insured, because I chose to, but my small trailer isn't. If I tried to get it insured it would probably cost me more than I paid for it.
Only extras were putting in is a small fridge and some hanging flower walls. I'll make sure I get it weighed once complete to ensure I sit below 750kg total weight. I've no traceability with regards to manufacture or Safe working and gross loads.
I really appreciate the help and information I've recieved. I've called the department of transport and they've backed up what I for I've recieved regarding the size and weight and not needing registered. Only issue would be taking it abroad which I don't need to. I was instructed to email the international vehicles standard agency with images and information to ensure everything complies with regards to safety.
It does look of the same construction of those 3m 750kg rated caterpod trailers. I may get in touch with them for more info. Thanks.
