I have an old but solid CombiCamp trailer tent, which I can hitch and pitch independently, but I struggle with getting it out of my garage or back onto the driveway, due to a health issue which gives problems with my muscles. My plan, when I could afford it, was to get a motor mover fitted. However I have just contacted the company to organise it and they don't think it will fit! I have tried a winding jockey wheel mover, but even though the trailer is pretty light, I haven't got the strength in my arms to make it work. Has anyone tried a motorised jockey wheel like a Mr Shifter or similar?

if you cant manage to use a winding mover due to lack of strength, then you will certainly have issue with a powered one as they need to be removed/refitted. what about using a remote controlled winch that will drag your trailer into place either in or out

The Mr Shifta is a self motorised mover, which I think would be ideal for you, although there are two considerations which I think you need to look at;
1) If your Combi is fitted with a bracket underneath the drawbar, just behind the hitch, would it prevent you being able to land the hitch onto the ball, and
2) If your Combi is fitted with over-run brakes, you would have to make sure you have the appropriate bracket fitted to the Mr Shifta to allow you to "reverse"it.

Thanks Eddie12, no bracket under the hitch, and it's such an old unit (1978) that it doesn't have brakes. The winding jockey wheel also had a problem with traction as well as me being too weak to use it. The Mr Shifta design with the weight of the battery under the hitch I think it will be more efficient.

Has anyone in here used a Mr Shifta? I'd appreciate your comments if you have, good or bad.

The comments which I made above are based on my own experience of using one, albeit approx 15 years ago, but they really haven't changed much over the years. I used mine to manouvre my caravan down a narrow passageway at the side of my house, and it was brilliant. Being self propelled and double wheeled, there is absolutely no lifting involved, and if you are fortunate enough to pick a second hand one up at a reasonable price, you probably wont lose a great amount on it when you do eventually sell.

just curious but which winding mover did you have on it? just we had one a long time back and used it on our caravan on gravel the caravan would have been twice as heavy as your trailer and my then 12 yr old could move the caravan on her own! are you sure that it was working properly?

I bought a second hand Mr Shifta (even after all the negative reviews) as I have a very tight driveway and wanted something to move the caravan rather than two of us pushing it up a slight incline. Didn't want to compromise the payload with traditional motor mover and don't really have any problems pitching the caravan on sites as its only a two berth. The Mr Shifta at home works perfectly for us but you do need to have solid surface to operate on (we have block paving) otherwise it can lose traction, however our does cope with a slight incline with no problem. Another tip, we don't have a dedicated battery for the Shifta, I put a couple of concrete blocks in the battery compartment just to weigh it down and run a set of long jump leads from the shifta to the leisure battery. As we generally have electric hook ups on site the battery is always fully charged so avoids the need for a second one on the shifta. We find it a great piece of kit.

Thanks Andy, love the idea of the concrete blocks and jump leads, what a great idea!

I took the plunge yesterday and bought a Mr Shifta 2, got it home last night and had a go...

Well it works an absolute treat!

Hi. I have an electric jockey wheel which moves at 6/7 metres per minute but I’d like one to move a trailer around a campsite and go closer to walking speed. Any ideas? I’m looking for something at closer to a metre per second

Hello OrionRoth - welcome to the forum. Unfortunately, I don't think you will get a jockey wheel mover which will travel at anywhere need the speed to which you require. In fact, even the bolt on movers wouldn't go anywhere near that speed - the closest of which I think is a Reich which reportedly does approx. 15mtrs. per minute.

My Powrtouch bolt on mover claims in the spec 16.8m/min at full speed (has reduced speed options as well), that's no where near walking speed (approx 80m/min), but seems perfectly adequate for moving well over a ton of caravan the usual modest distances involved. I've moved mine 50m between different storage pitches and it was no hassle.

Don't think I'd want a caravan moving under it's own power going much faster, it bucks around too much as jockey wheel hits uneven ground lumps/dips and deflects it!
