I am going to fit a new towbar with the intention of buying a pennine fiesta trailer tent aged between 2000 and 2010 tent do I need a 7 or a 13 pin cable for the electrics.

Firstly, you need to know what the difference is between a 7 pin and 13 pin towing socket. The 7 pin BLACK towing socket is for the rear trailer lights only and there was a supplement which was a 7 pin GREY socket which could be added as an extra for incorporating the circuits for charging the leisure battery on the trailer and for 12 volt fridge operation (in Transit) which is fed from the towing vehicle's alternator. The 13 pin socket is a modern conversion of the BLACK and GREY sockets together but the connection itself it far more secure as it pushes in and twist locks into place. The older 7 pin versions were just push in an pull out so lots of wiggling about to engage or disengage the plug and socket which quite often weakened the contacts which electrical towing problems were quite common. If you need to charge a leisure battery and run the fridge then the 13 pin is far the best option.

Go for 13 pin.
You can get an adapter to run 7 pin if needed.
I have a IFOR trailer that's 7 pin, but everything else is 13 pin, and it all works fine on either.

2009 was changeover year for UK caravans from twin 7pin to 13pin iirc.

Personally I'd opt to 'future-proof' the installation with a 13 pin fully wired socket, then you are good to go with anything you may wish to tow. There is little or no cost penalty, the 13 pin sockets tend to be more reliable and can be retro compatible with 7 pin adaptors.

Would you be kind enough to explain to the less experienced, how a !3 pin plug is more reliable than a 7 pin, I have towed numerous different types of trailers over a period of 59 years and never had a single problem with 7 pin plugs ever.
I have a car with CAN BUS electrics and will never ever connect a fridge to it or an additional battery, as could be the case when towing a caravan. One of my friends in the motor trade has warned me never to do it.
Call me old fashioned but I cannot think of a single justifiable reason to have a 13 pin socket fitted to my car ,that is the reason i have a 7 pin.
