Hi all, we've decided we are going to get a trigano 310, we need another car as our crossland won't pull the skin off a rice pudding! We've been looking at the Peugeot 2008 (2019) 1.2 allure 1250kg max towing weight. Just wondered if anyone has one & what they tow like? Practical caravan review wasnt great but that was with a van over 1100kg, the trigano is 850kg. Views would be great, thanks

havent got one, but had a look at the figures, no not good, even the nose weight is very low at max of 48kgs

I haven't driven one. However, Vauxhall is owned by the same parent company as Peugeot and Citroen (PSA) and the Vauxhall Crossland was developed alongside the Peugeot 2008. Therefore, if you're not happy with the towing performance of one of these cars, it stands to reason that the other is unlikely to be any better.

Most small SUVs share the same engines and many other mechanical parts with the manufacturers' respective superminis (e.g Peugeot 208, Vauxhall Corsa). This means that (a) they really weren't designed or built with towing heavy weights in mind and (b) the engines are already having to struggle with the extra weight of the SUV as opposed to the supermini that they were originally made for.

I suspect that to get the towing performance you're after from an SUV, you'll need to look at a larger class of car such as Peugeot 3008 or VW T-Roc. However, if you're tempted by a hybrid version - and I can understand why you might be - be aware that many are either not approved for towing at all or have significantly lower towing capacities than the petrol or diesel versions.

Hi, thanks, I know peugeot 2008 & vauxhall crossland pretty much the same, ( think it was also based on the Renault captur) crossland towing weight is 650kg where as the peugeot is 1250kg. I would never dream of towing anything with the crossland as it clearly can't handle it, shouldn't imagine anyone gets tow bars fitted to one. The bhp is something like 73 on the crossland and 110/120 on the peugeot. No idea why vauxhall made the crossland with such poor specs if I'd known we would have towed i would never have bought one. The practical caravan reviews for the peugeot were OK but it was done with an 1100kg caravan whereas ours would only be 850kg. I hate looking at cars

Hi Sharktale,
              will let you know what it tows like on Thursday. we have a peugeot 2008 GT line (130 bhp) and will be picking up a Trigano 310 on Thursday, then driving 200 miles back home.
               I've been on a few outfit matching sites and it will tow it but probably not the perfect match. As already mentioned it has a low nose weight of 50 KG.
               I am hoping it tows alright, don,t want to change cars if i can help it.
                 To be honest if we did't already have the car we would have gone for a bigger car to tow with. Change of car might still need to happen.

HI Sharktale,sorry I didn't message yesterday but time we picked up the van and negotiated the M25 in torrential rain it was getting late.
              Anyway I forgot to mention this is my first time towing a caravan as have only been towing a small camping trailer up to now so have got nothing to compare it to.
               Found it very easy to tow, need a few more gear changes than normal but nothing too bad. Bought some towing mirrors but didn't need them as van is only slightly wider than car so will be returning them.
               Stopped off at Stonehenge campsite for two nights as it's right on my route home to South Devon so I could get used to everything, like reversing it while not too many people around watching me, not got the hand of that yet. Good job it's a light van, two of us managed to push it into place.
                 Think the best thing was pulling up on site in the pouring rain and only having to wind down four legs to set up instead of setting up a tent In the pouring rain as was nearly always the case.
                   As I said not towed a caravan before so nothing to compare it to but I definitely found the Peugeot more than capable. Thought I might have to change cars but going to stick with the Peugeot for now. People with more experience will probably say the car is not really not up to the job but I found it fine.

Gave up towing a couple of years ago and moved to the dark side (van conversion!) but well done for getting your first van home in foul conditions.

As a measure of how much strain you are putting on the engine, can you assess how much your fuel consumption has increased compared to when you were towing the camping trailer?

Or will more experienced heads tell me that how much fuel you use is neither here nor there?

Have towed a Trigano 310 for the last 4yrs using a Skoda Fabia Estate 1.2litre turbo petrol automatic. It has had coped well and glad we opted for an automatic. The tow bar limit on this car is 50kg which is the correct loading for the 310. The engine power is 105bhp.

How much extra fuel you use towing bears little relationship to strain on the engine & rest of drivetrain. A car that does 55mpg solo might average 35mpg or worse towing depending on weight of caravan. All that is happening there is that fuelling to engine is increased due to extra weight. There is no free ride. To move 3tonnes 10miles takes more fuel than moving 1.5tonnes 10miles.

Any extra strain on the drivetrain is down to the driver. A car driven hard solo with constant heavy acceleration & braking will suffer far more wear & tear than a car driven gently & progressively while towing. It is not so much speed & weight that causes wear more so the pace at which the speed is achieved from a standing start.

Thanks all, I have the job of car shopping this week I hate car shopping. Hubby was looking at the mokka x, 1300kg towing. I'll see whats about, I really like the peugeot. Garage getting cleared too. We went on Monday and had a look at a 310, really nice, was a little smaller than i expected but I still really liked it, I guess they look bigger in photos. Just the 2 of us so fine.

I asked because when I towed the fuel consumption was considerably better than when Himself drove my car.

You have confirmed what I always believed which is that it was his 'normal' driving style that impacted the fuel use, not the caravan.    Your description of constant heavy acceleration & braking is sadly all too familiar.
