I just need to say I have a vauxhall insignia sports tourer and for a car of this type and the estate category it's one the best towcars I've ever had it's faultless pulls like a train and so comfortable.. the 2.0 cdti is brilliant and packs a punch .. this is my observation others might not agree ..

I haven't driven the Insignia but would say exactly the same about the VW Passat or Arteon 2.0 TDI. Most family size cars with reasonably powerful diesel engines are pretty good to be fair.

The Vauxhall is dirt cheap on the used market, a hell of a lot of metal for the money. I may have to look at buying my own car for the first time in 35 years and would give it serious consideration.
Sadly, my last Passat (2.0TDI) was on it`s third engine by 75000 miles which has left a nasty taste.

Big hatchback cars are brilliant for towing, they are just getting less popular as everyone is switching to SUV's
I had a few Mondeo's over the years, all were brilliant towcars and great family luggers.

Ouch. I can understand that after an experience like that, you wouldn't touch another with a barge pole no matter what anyone said. My own experience though is that my work have run VW, Audi and Skoda diesel cars from about 2006, right up until last year. I don't think we have had a single mechanical reliability issue with any of them. It was only the BMW that the director had which needed the engine and gearbox replacing after 9k miles!

I know exactly why it's an issue as I've just had a pair of rear heavy duty springs fitted which should now allow 80-85 kgs. towball weight limit.

Yes, because the springs are actually standard fitment in height, it's just that the bar that the springs are manufactured from are slightly bigger in diameter possibly about 2mm. which provides extra resistance on the downward pressure at the rear of the vehicle. If the springs were custom made to a specific requirement then yes it would be classed as illegal as the springs could be lower or higher in height which means that the front springs would need to matched respectively to maintain suspension stability.

Well that explains a lot!

I tow with an Insignia and it is a real beauty....

However, I have had to replace the rear springs several times over the years...

Guess I'll get the bathroom scales out now and check the nose weight before travel!
