Check the plated GVW of the car then add the plated mtplm of caravan, if over 3,500kg you need a B+E if under a B is OK.

The answer above is correct. Therefore, in order to be able to tow a caravan of MTPLM 1300kg on a 'Category B' licence, the maximum plated weight of the car must be 2200kg or less.

The weight to look for is the first one shown on the car's VIN plate, which will either be inside the engine bay or on one of the door pillars.

I wouldn't like to guess as to whether the max. plated weight of an Insignia will or won't exceed 2200kg. It's going to be close. But in this case, the law doesn't do "close". 2200kg would be legal, 2201kg would not. It really is as black and white as that.

Note though that the above does not apply if you obtained your full licence before 1997.

You would need to load plenty into the car to get it fully loaded. I think Insignia gross weight is around 2.25tonnes. Caravan payload is not so much usually around 150kg. Is 1300kg the fully laden weight of your caravan ? There will be 2 weights on caravan plate. Higher weight is max gross weight. To get the combined weight of car & caravan for licence purpose you add the gross weights of car & caravan together. These are not the actual on road weight but the max weights allowed for fully laden car & caravan.

It is easier to understand if you think MaM which is gross weight of car or caravan is used for licensing purposes. Although you car & caravan will probably not be fully laden so will be under 3.5tonnes together on a weighbridge if the combined MaM is over 3.5t then you need a B+E licence.

The actual on road laden weight is what you consider for construction & use law ie you should not overload beyond MaM of vehicle.

Yes. Check your car gross weight but if it is over 2.2t then you will need to take your test. Good luck with it.
