Hi all some advice please we've currently got a insignia sports tourer 2.0 cdti and love it .. we have seen a Kia sorento 4x4 looks the business and it's got a towbar already fitted.. I've seen alot of them on the road so they must be a good tow car .. however my insignia is on a 09 plate and it's a beauty of a comfortable towcar .. my question is .. is it worth changing for the Kia or keep what I've already got.. the Kia is on a 56 plate with 138bhp .. and the insignia with 160bhp .. the Kia has a higher kerb weight at 2706 with my insignia on 1600 .. what's your thoughts
depends what you are towing and/or if you intend to change your caravan.
I had an Insignia estate, and I too loved it, good spec and good fuel economy, but we changed our caravan and had to change the car because the weights didnt stack up. The Insignia kerb weight is low and the towbar limit on mine was a crappy 75Kg, when I tried to get the caravan nose weight to 75Kg it snaked all over the place and the weight ratio was almost 95%. I now have a Kuga 100Kg towbar allowance and about 86%.
We have just brought our new caravan Avondale and it tows that beautifully with plenty of power .. I've seen a couple of sorentos for sale and santa fe our Avondale is only 1300 the towball limit on the insignia is 85% .. our last lunar was heaver than our new van and the insignia towed that like a dream ..
If your Insignia does the job, and is running well; I'd keep it.
Perhaps a case of better the devil you know, but I've been through this a few times with our 2006 Sharan.
Can't find a logical reason to swap, but I know that sometimes, the heart rules the head.
When I had the Insignia I towed a Swift mptlm 1340, no issues and mine was the 2l diesel 140 model. We now have a Lunar with a mtplm of 1500. If I hadn't changed the van would probably still have the Insignia, or changed it for a newer one. A point that I miss is the large boot space, take that into account.
I might be wrong, someone will let me know, but I am led to believe that you should follow the car manufacturers technical details and not the towbar manufacturers
Finding the correct noseweight
The correct noseweight for the caravan is the lowest of three noseweight figures: that of the caravan chassis manufacturer; that of the tow vehicle manufacturer; and that of the towbar manufacturer.
The chassis manufacturer stamps both the maximum noseweight and the maximum load that the coupling is designed to carry on the coupling. These figures are identified by the letters ‘S’ and ‘GA’ respectively. The towcar’s maximum noseweight will be found in the owner’s manual, whilst the maximum noseweight on the towbar will be found on the towbar plate. Whichever is the lowest is the one you have to work to.
The tow ball weight on my Insignia is 85kg.
I would be very surprised if any model was rated at 135kg.
More likely that the latter figure is the rating for the tow ball rather than the vehicle.

It worrys me that a number of new caravan owners, because of covid, will be hitting the roads without the correct knowledge, potentially dangerous outfits
