For the first time, I've found my choice of car insurance providers reduced after specifying my towbar as a modification. Admiral for example just said "we can't offer you cover", but we're happy with me if I removed the modification.
I still found cover elsewhere, but it was 25% more expensive.
Seems strange! I've never had a problem in that respect, and many insurers didn't seem to even consider it a modification. Certainly not had any additional premium levied, and definitely never had a refusal to quote.
Have you actually spoken to them ? Or is this just filling out online quotes ? If a call centre operative tries to charge more for a towbar ask to speak to somebody more senior. I’ve never heard of being charged extra for a towbar. I do mention it but they tell it is a no extra cost modification.
Just online quotes, but it never caused a problem before. I tend to go for the cheapest reputable brand, maybe the cheaper end is where it's showing a problem
I'm with Admiral, informed them of my factory fit option tow bar when I bought my car from new, no hassles, no extra premium that I'm aware of and certainly no refusal to insure.
Unless you have a unusual car, it seems very odd to decline cover.
I've never had a problem either. I always trawl the internet for annual quotes and never had a problem.
Previously, I just informed the insurer that a towbar was fitted just in case of a claim might be rejected. Again. no problem and no increase in premium.
What make/model of car are you trying to insure?
------------- I came into this world with nothing and I've still got most of it left.
Hi all
I’ve been with Admiral since 2015 every time I get a renewal I do an online search to compare with the renewal and phone Admiral, they always match or beat the quote, recently changed my 2010 Kuga for a 2016 Kuga ( with no tow-bar fitted) I informed them of the change on day of purchase, they charged £25 admin fee, 2 weeks later I phoned to tell them I had put my personal number plate on and was having a detachable tow ball fitted later that week, according to Admiral the admin fee covered me for 28 days from date or purchase so no extra charge for the plate or tow bar

I'm with LV and it went down by a tenner when I told them I'd had one fitted, maybe they consider it will protect the rear end in the case of a light shunt up the rear ooo matron!
But where it may help, if the driver who shunts into the back of your car tries to do a runner, he may well find the towbar has done quite a lot of damage to his motor and may not get very far.
Hi
They come as standard with a disco 4.
Never trusted that tow bar at all.
I had a fixed heavy duty rated tow bar fitted, overkill but safe.
I told Hasting years ago that i tow, and i have never been asked the question since directly by them.
As well is two words!
