Hi all,
Does anyone know if new shape Audi A4 Avant 2.0 diesel ( not quattro ) are good tow cars ?
I've recently been looking at Audi A6 avants as a new car but then seen a smaller, cheaper A4 for sale and wondered if any good ?
On that we'll known matching website with my caravan it says the A4 is a 74% match and the A6 a 69% match. Only worry is that website puts the A4 at over 1800kg which I feel could be incorrect. Seems a little heavy to me ?
Anyway does anyone have either car for a tow car and can recommend ?
Thank you.

Looks like the Kerb weight on that is 1575kg with a max tow of 1800, so with a caravan you would be looking at between 85% and 100% of 1575kg,I don't have my calculator handy but I am sure you can work it out.
That well known matching website ( tow car info )which no one in this country should use, are notorious for using very different weights to us as they are not British. Hope this helps.

Thanks for replying Tina. I thought the A4 would be lighter than that website. Is there another website to use and trust or without sounding thick is there a website where you can easily find the kerb weight of vehicles?

For info my caravan is 1365 MTPLM so it would be roughly 85 % if the A4 Is 1575kg.

Thank you.

Parker's car specs website is usually a reliable source for weight information.
I just googled the information you supplied and got the weights of your car, although the best information is always the weights on the actual vehicle plate or on the V5.
Looks like the A4 and your caravan are a very good match but just double check.

Thanks again for the info. I won't be using that matching website again then but will certainly look on parkers for kerbweights.

Disaster struck with my old car whilst towing my caravan as the engine blew. Whilst I know it was due to the car being extremely old, tired and already ready for the knackers yard, due to that incident there is still a very small part of my brain that thinks I now need a huge tank to pull my caravan to be safe and not cause the car engines any problems.
Hence why I was considering the larger A6. Obviously with the A4 being cheaper if it would be a good tow car and manage towing without problems I would go with the cheaper option.

If you are in C&MC try using their outfit matching service which is free and seems pretty comprehensive.

I have towed with both the A4 Avant and A6 Avant in the past all with the 2.0TDi engine in its different guises. Caravan was max 1500kg. All towed within the 85% and with good economy ( all autos). Extensively in France but also Italy / Switzerland / Austria As well as the UK. I currently have A Q5 which is a better tow car than either. The latest model was an A6 Avant 2016 model. I have friends who has towed more recently with an A4 Avant 2.0 tai quattro (2018 model) - very nice car and he now regrets getting rid of it in favour of a Tiguan. Be careful where you go for the tow bar and make sure you get dedicated electrics with a software update included the price.

I've towed as far as Switzerland with a VW Passat estate that has the same 2.0 TDI engine, and it was brilliant. There's no need for you to get hung up over a few % either way with regard to towing weight ratios, particularly as you already have some towing experience. The car will be more than capable.

The one note of caution I would give is that the maximum permissible weights of the car and your caravan combined could exceed 3500kg, which means that if you have a post-1997 'Category B' licence you'll need to take a 'B+E' test to upgrade it. That would of course also be the case with the heavier Audi A6.

Thanks for your replies.

To be honest unforthnately for me I am very much hung up over weights etc and more so worried if the new car engine is going to blow up under strain just like the old one did.

As I explained earlier the sensible side of my brain knows my old car was already knackered and towing just sent it over over edge but there is a small part of my brain that worries about putting any new car under the same strain.

I need to just accept the bad luck i had with my old vehicle and think positive about a new one.

With regards the 1997 rule that does affect me as I'm on the rocky road to old age I'm afraid.

Thanks again everyone, If the figures are correct I think both the A4 and A6 will be fine towing my caravan so it's just down to money and which car I like the most. 👍👍

If you passed your test before 1997 or 8 and had the B+E licence you can preserve it past your 70th birthday by having a medical.
