The search facility is not working on this site at the moment. I am sure this question has been asked before. I will be towing a caravan from Telford to Porthmadog soon and would like to know the best route.
The A5 left turn on to the A470 looks very tight.

M54/A5 to Shrewsbury, A458, A470, A487? ViamIchelin does not recommend A5/A470.

I don't know the route, but just looked at Google street view (a great way of remotely assessing any tricky spots on routes), it doesn't look that bad (by my standards anyway - I've seen and done worse!), just a slow and wide turn. Looks like the A470 brings it's own challenges at a number of spots anyway.

As to best route, I use the online TomTom MyDrive route finder (no TomTom device or account needed), it allows you to plug in your vehicle/trailer type and dimensions/weights etc., then routes accordingly. You can print out route or transfer it to your TomTom if you have one. Generally find it does a good job, certainly not picking routes an ordinary car based satnav/route finder would!

The turn onto the 470 is OK, but the next 4 miles are really tough, its not too narrow but lots of overhanging wall and trees, this restricts your road space and anything big coming the other way and you are in trouble. Trust me I know!
For me A5, A494, then A470 north. All very good roads.

Thanks all, the route I planned was ok , the turning from the A5 not bad but as you say a bit tight and awkward in places after. I came back as per “phishings” suggestion can’t say it was any easier, the road surfaces very poor in places..
I have towed all over the UK and have to say North Wales is probably the worst for towing.

I see that the OP has already made the journey, but for future reference my choice would be A5 and A494, then turn right at Bala onto the A4212 to Trawsfynydd, where it meets the A470 into Porthmadog. I've towed that route with no issues.
