I was looking at the new Hilux as a potential for a new tow car next year. Ive seen videos that say they are a bit sluggish or can be unstable. The new Hilux is 2.8 diesel and has trailer stability. Anybody have one. We have a twin axle 1700kg laden van. On paper looks ok

Hi George, we tow with a pickup, albeit a newish Navara (2.3) and love it as a towcar. Keep plenty weight in the back (awning/food/heavy stuff) and it's a pleasure to drive. MPG not too shabby either - mid-high 20's towing a TA. Have a mate who went from a Hilux for years to a Navara but tows heavy plant around and he finds it a nicer ride.

The only downside to all of them is length - you need an artic spot in services to park up!

Hi George, thanks for that. Cant buy a Navara now or i would have that on my list. On the length, we have been towing with a discovery which is only 30 cm shorter than the hilux, so i hope that wouldn't matter. I was thinking we would get most of our kit in the back of the pick up, like you said, So the van would stay close to the MRO unladen weight. I've also read some van makers dont like people using pick ups, I've asked my coachman dealer to check on that. Pick up would save us money, the SUV's are getting lighter all the time limiting choice for heavy caravans. Pick up would save me money. Considering, outside caravan holidays, i just use it to drive to work every day

Some caravan makers feel that commercial vehicles have hard suspension which damages their very flimsily built caravans if towed by them.

They can get a bit funny over warranty claims if they have been towed this way.

Strangely, these same manufacturers deliver them from factory to dealer using commercial vehicles and this doesn't damage them at all.

I’m not a scientist but I know the new hilux has softer suspension set up because of changing markets - so leaf spring and shockers , how is that worse for a caravan than a 2010 Santa Fe with leaf spring suspension, or a 20 yr old defender 110
Not sure I understand it fully, if my pick up is just for commute and the occasional garden centre or builders merchant run, it’s certainly not commercial

George, there are a few Navara's out there still to order, but getting more like hen's teeth. We didn't really want another new one just yet, but as they will all soon be gone, put our name down on one for autumn delivery, as not sure what we would have instead.

You do see plenty around towing vans so not sure about the warranty side of it, has been talked of on other caravan forums and the consensus seems to be pick ups are classed as car dervied vans so ok as not strictly 'commercial' as used for pleasure purposes.

Thanks George; take it you don't fancy the hilux? The higher spec ones have the driver safety aids, adaptive cruise which I like when I'm on the motorway
I'll do some research on the novara to see if it's worth chasing one down.

I understand, im not in love with them but fed up buying expensive SUV's just to two 3-4 times a year. I wish i had thought of it before.

Hilux are tough, there are loads in Australia used by police, public services and tradespeople.
Top Gear tried to kill one despite their efforts it kept going.
5 year warranty too.
Our friendly plumber is on his second, he likes them. He has Invincible auto model.

Could it be that the commercial vehicles they deliver them with are on air suspension
