I just bought the Elddis caravan and my car is an Citroen Nemo 1248cc. It tows okay on the flat but I am worried about taking it to the Highlands.
I think I may be looking for a used 4x4 with good towing power.

I am retired and on a budget.

Any suggestions

What is the MTPLM of the caravan? What is the kerb weight of your Citroen? I expect that the caravan is far too heavy for your tow car and even have been considered dangerous if you had been stopped by the authorities.

How big is your budget?

Just checked the details quickly, the car has a max tow of 1000kg and the caravan MTPLM is 1225kg with MIRO of 1020kg so definitely not a legal outfit.

I would look at something like a Freelander 1 TD4. They are reasonably cheap and as long as you have one with the TD4 engine rather than the Di or petrol engines they are a very good tow car. Max towing weight is 2000kg. I would go for a post 2004 facelift model which can be had for around £1000-£1500 in godd condition. I have had a couple of these vehicles in the past, but unfortunately they are too small for my needs now.

Hi Margaret

You need to be really careful with towing weights as if you were caught towing a caravan that was over the legal weight for your car you could be in serious trouble and heaven forbid you had an accident, your insurance would be invalid!

From what I can see online, the weight of your caravan is 1225kg. This means that whatever car you buy must have a towing limit above that and to be even safer, you need to look at the Kerb weight of the car. The recommendation is that your caravan should weigh no more than 85% of the car which means that ideally, you want a car with a kerb weight over 1441kg.

We used to tow a caravan that weighed almost the same, ours was 1249, and we started off towing with a Nissan Tino 1.8 Petrol but it really struggled so we changed it to a 2l diesel Hyundai ix35 which towed it very well. You won’t need a massive big 4x4 but a diesel is probably going to be better than a petrol and look for about a 2l engine. I have had a quick look on the caravan club tow car match site and using your caravan, all the cars they recommend have a minimum of a 1.8l engine. However, the most important legal thing to check is the maximum towing weight of the car and then for safety the kerbweight of the car.

Just had a look on a few car and caravan matching sites, looks like your car is not a match for your van unfortunatley!
Also saw your other post about axles.
Please be careful with towing weights as you could be breaking the law.
and a van that is heavier than your car is very dangerous.
This is a great forum with lots of very helpful people.
No such thing as a silly queation.

I don't know how much towing you have done, but it sounds like you do not have a lot of experience. If that is the case, I would do a 1/2 or full day trailer training course, mainly to get the hang of reversing and manoeuvring in tight spaces. When towing there are a few weight limits you need to be aware of as exceeding them can result in a fine or points on your licence: The obvious ones are the tow vehicle's max towing weight, max gross weight, max train weight and the caravan/trailer max gross weight. The max train weight is usually the tow vehicle's max tow weight plus the max towing weight, but not always, on some cars it is lower than this. The ones that people often miss that you must always stick within are the vehicle's max axle load and the maximum vertical tow hitch load (noseweight).
A lot of people mention the tow vehicle's kerb weight, but this has no legal relevance when towing, although some do recommend that you limit your trailer weight to 85% of your vehicle's kerb weight, this is only guidance, I tow commercially and usually my trailers are around 100%-160% of my Land Rover's actual weight.
When loading your caravan try to load it so that you are as close to maximum noseweight as possible, never tow a trailer that is heavier at the back than the front and try and put the heaviest items as directly above the axle as possible.

Hi Margaret

I can see that some of the replies above might seem a bit alarming, particularly if you are new to towing. The first thing to say is don't panic. Legally, the position is not quite as clear cut as some have made out. The key is ensuring that your gross train weights (the combined weights of the car and that of a trailer it can tow) are not exceeded. For almost all cars, the max towing limit assumes that the car itself is fully loaded. If that was not the case, and you were to tow the caravan close to empty, it may be legally possible for you to tow, or have towed it with your Citroen.

However, just because something is just about within legal limits does not automatically mean it should be recommended. I do agree that your Citroen is not really suitable for towing your caravan. You really are asking a lot of a 1248cc petrol engine to tow 1.2 tonnes of caravan in addition to the weight of the car itself, and the low 1000kg towing limit is almost certainly down to this.

The good news though is that there are a lot of cars that can comfortably tow 1225kg. You absolutely don't need 4x4 unless you're planning on doing a lot of towing in snow, mud or soft ground. Sensibly, you should look for something with a both a kerb weight (or mass in service, which isn't quite the same thing but is close enough) and a towing limit of around 1400kg. This includes a reasonably powerful version of a small family car such as VW Golf or Ford Focus, a small MPV such as VW Touran or Ford C-Max, or a small SUV such as Nissan Qashqai or Peugeot 3008.

Diesel is generally better suited to towing heavy weights than petrol. Ideally look for 1.8 to 2.0-litre and 130-150bhp for a good compromise between comfortable towing ability and low running costs when you're not towing with it.

Hi Sam. Everyone is so kind. First i want to thank everyone and I don't know how to do that.

I don't have time to answer all posts.

Sam I just bought a Rav4 2.2. I was nervous with the Citroen.
However, the Citroen was automatic and I am having to get used to manual again.

I am planning to take the caravan out next Thursday 26th for the fist time. I am going to Loch Lomond.

I have been looking at a reversing camper to help line up the tow bar. I bought a camera from e-bay £6.99, no monitor.

Unable to get help from auto electricians. Quotes £200.00 and one even said what I wanted was not possible?
Can you throw any light or suggestions on that?

Your RAV4 should easily be able to manage your caravan, so enjoy your trip and I'm sure you'll be used to manual by the time you get back home, if you aren't already!

I know very little about reversing cameras and even less about vehicle electrics, but I can't quite see how something you can buy online for £6.99 can easily transmit the images to inside your car. If you're looking for the images to be shown on your inbuilt satnav screen, this will mean somehow integrating the camera into your car electrics, which will be very fiddly at best and impossible at worst. I can see how the quotes given by auto electricians are expensive.

The camera might be capable of transmitting images to a separate monitor, or to your phone via Bluetooth, which if possible would likely be a cheaper (but obviously less neat) solution.

My own feeling however is that you needn't worry too much about this. Do you tour with anyone who could help guide you to line up the tow bar? Failing that, a neighbour? I'm sure someone else on the site you stay on at Loch Lomond will help you when you leave. Once you've done it a few times, you'll almost certainly learn to line up the tow bar simply from noting the position of the caravan in your car mirrors.

Your caravan will have what's called marker lights on the front, they have clear lenses and will be close to the outside edge of the van.

By looking in your car door mirrors get yourself in the middle of those two lights and back you come. Get a long garden bamboo cane and prop up at the caravan hitch, then you have something to gauge where you are when reversing. It will take a good few goes but you will get the hang of it.
