We towed a Coachman Amara 380/2 1100kg with an Audi A3 etron for 3 years with no problems. Manchester to Perranporth at 60mph where possible 27mpg. It has a 1400cc petrol engine. The mpg is very much the same as the Seat Altea 2.0 TDI automatic.
We now have a Mercedes B 250e which is a plugin hybrid with a 1300cc petrol engine. On the same route it achieved 26mpg.

Hi Jochen, welcome to the forum.
So what mpg did you get from the Audi......you haven't said?
Was it better or worse than the Merc?

I'm not making much sense of this.... I read this as... Audi E-tron 27mpg, Mercedes 28mpg both hybrid, SEAT diesel pretty much the same mpg ie 27-28.
Why can't he drive a car using hybrid system or plug-in???

27 Audi 26 Mercedes. The pro for the Audi is that it has a dual clutch automatic with manual override which means that you can help the car when climbing hills. The Mercedes has a normal automatic with no manual override.Which it means it struggles slightly on long steep hills on the A30

i have the new updated BMW 330e, in hybrid mode i get around 65mpg on a run.
outside that i drive in pure electric, saves me £190 per month versus my diesel Mondeo.
It's just a shame it wont tow my caravan

I don't understand why manufacturers don't type approve their plug in vehicles for towing. They are missing out on a very large caravan towing market not just in the UK also in Europe. You would think that any manufacturer that would push their hybrids that could tow at the caravan market would make a killing

I guess it's the cost of type testing but maybe also due to the already large weight problems EVs have. It must put a strain on chassis and suspension etc. Adding the stresses of a caravan to that may be too much especially for a relatively small market.

I agree what you say about full EV's. But plugin hybrids have a lot smaller battery so the stress and strains will be more manageable. With the UK government wanting to ban the production of petrol and diesel vehicles by 2030 what are options for caravaners. The plugin hybrid is the only practical solution. At the moment. If you have a EV that can tow with a 300 mile range, towing will reduce the range to around 100 miles. With the lack of charging infrastructure at the moment it rules out EV's for towing. I don't agree that it's a small market especially in Europe

As far as I can tell new plug in hybrids will be banned in 2035, so just 5 years after petrol and diesel.
