I am thinking of buying a SKODA Superb 2.0 TDI SE DSG 4WD as my first tow car, does that give me enough options for buying a caravan. Were not sure what to get yet, was getting the car sorted out first.


Any help much appreciated

Hi welcome to the forum, they are not the heaviest cars but guessing that it has a kerbweight of about 1650kg you would be looking at a caravan with an MTPLM of about 1400kg, it is suggested that a novice tower should stick to around 85% of the kerbweight. It might be better to think about what caravan you want first then get a towcar to do the job.

I have the Octavia Estate 2.0TDi 4x4, (manual) very good engine with a good torque band. Haldex traction is very good around 90% power goes to the front wheels and 10% to rear with more powered transfered to rear if the front wheels start to slip, make sure you change the Haldex fluid every 3 years. My kerbweight is 1,495kg, van mtpm 1,318kg giving a 88% tow ratio. Skoda are very good tow cars and have won many awards, my Skoda badge came loose on the engine, took it off to stick it back on and under it was the Audi badge.

Obvious first question is new or used as that vehicle has been around for many years.

You’ll be waiting for any new car (or Motorhome) because of the chip shortage.
We have a 10 year old Škoda Superb (can’t advise on the towing, very happy with it as an estate car), OH says newer second hand ones are like hens teeth - check Autotrader for the version you want. We dropped in to look at one a few months ago & someone was driving 2 hours to see it.

I have the Superb 2.0 TDi SE L and tow a Bailey with a MPTLM of 1405kg and comes out at 91%, mine is only 2 wheel drive the 4x4 is heavier. It tows it superbly.

We have an Octavia Elegance.   Fantastic tower,enormous boot,up to 40mpg when towing and never a problem in 9 years.

Just choose any caravan in the appropriate weight band and have a trouble free time

We have a Skoda Yeti 2.0 TDI DSG 4WD and tow a 1380 Lunar with no problems.
Personally I'd look at cars and caravans at the same time to ensure a good match.

Good advice about choosing a towcar to suit a caravan of your choice. I didn't do that and I bought a Skoda Karoq as I knew I was going to change the Bailey Unicorn Valencia I previously owned. As it happened, the Karoq towed the Valencia quite well, even though it was about a 105% match, but still legally towable by the Karoq. The Valencia had to go because we didn't like it and we have a Swift Freestyle 2 which is the Dealer's special version of a Sprite Alpine 2, which we're finding a downsize too far. Can't really see us sticking with it.
Looking back, I could have got a Kodiaq for roughly the same money and it would have given us more scope to get a caravan more suitable for our needs.
