What is the MTPLM of the caravan?

Generally diesel cars are better for towing than petrol but your choice may depend on how the car is used when not towing, eg short journeys or motorway commutes.

What is your budget?

Hi Woolster

Have a look at the Caravan Club guide to buying a tow car, it is very useful.

Wooster, you need to know the weight of the caravan to ensure a safe and legal towing match. Come back to us with the caravan MTPLM and we can suggest some possible cars that you can search for locally.

Mass in Running Order weight: 810 kgs
Maximum allowable weight is: 1000 kgs

so that leaves us with needing to find out what engine size and year your current car is, it may be just a case of you adjusting your expectations of your car

Hi Wooster

I've copied a link for you here

https://towcar.info/

This gives great information.

With a budget of £1500 I'd be looking at a 2.0 diesel Insignia. If looked after they are decent tow car. There are plenty on the market.(Auto trader)
I've towed with an insignia, amongst others. and it has been a very, very good tow car

Rich73 - sorry but I would not touch the towcar.info site with a barge pole. Outfit matching sites in general are notoriously inaccurate and this is one of the worst. It's a Dutch site and many of the cars contained in its database are not to UK spec, which affects the weights and potentially also the towing capacities. There is no substitute for obtaining the information for the specific car and caravan that you actually have (or are looking to buy) and working out for yourself whether it is suitable.

Wooster - as Rob has said, we need to know the weight of your caravan to be able to help you here. Look for a small metal plate, normally by the bottom of the door but occasionally on the drawbar. There will be two weights on here - the Mass in Running Order (MIRO) which is the weight of the caravan as it left the factory and the Maximum Technically Permissible Laden Mass (MTPLM) which is the maximum it can weigh when fully loaded. The latter may be labelled Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM) which has exactly the same meaning. Feel free to give us both of those weights.
