Hi there again lol we are going to look at a ford b max 1 6 tdi anyone have recommendations for towing it shouldnt really be a problem as only have a light2 berth abbey chorus I've been told anything under 1.6 diesel isn't suitable I'm new to all this towing can anyone advise on a vehicle like this please ?
In my opinion it is always better to have too much power than too little. Even more so with the cost of fuel these days as too little power in reserve means much higher fuel consumption when towing than when not. With my car there is very little difference.
The best thing to do would be to go on one of the tow-car matching sites, both major clubs have them. You will need full details of your particular car and whatever you intend to tow with it.
Have you looked up the vehicle weight, towing limit etc like I suggested on the previous threads you started? If you do check the specs on the Parker's specs website you'll see that the B Max is totally unsuitable as the max tow limit is lower than the weight of the caravan even when the caravan is empty.
Have you checked the weights etc of your current car to see if it really is unsuitable?
Assuming that your caravan has an MTPLM of 1000kg (you will need to check this) there are many cars that will be able to tow your caravan safely. If you want a diesel have a look at cars such as Focus, Astra, Golf and similar sized vehicles, check the details on Parker's website and pay attention to the max tow weight, the kerbweight and power output.
The B Max you were considering has a max tow of 575kg so was totally unsuitable and illegal with your caravan. We used to have a Focus estate 1.6 diesel with a max tow of 1200kg, it was ok for towing our caravan at 1150kg but could have done with more power on long hills sometimes, the 2 litre diesel would have been better but fuel economy might have been worse during everyday use. We have also towed with a 1.6 diesel Mokka which was more powerful but not so good for towing as it suffered from pitching at times as it was a much shorter car, I realise that a Mokka is not likely within your budget but I just wanted to try and show you what to look for when choosing a car.
The latest CCC magazine (July 2022) rates 30 tow cars in 6 categories from up to 1,400kg to 1.900kg+ and EVs too. Prices & specifications, kerb weights, towing limits etc, as a 2-page spread.
As well is two words!
