hi all we are of to Scarborough next weekend and was wondering what the best route was we are coming from Chesterfield and was thinking of M1, M18, M62, A616 after Driffield there is a road, B1249 which joins the A64, is this road suitable for a caravan?
I use TomTomMydrive (you can set vehicle type and dimensions) to plan my caravan routes, and that shows your route via B1249 as a viable option, and a peek at Google streetview seems to indicate at least in parts that it's a decent enough road to tow a van along, although it gets narrow in places.
That said TomTom shows preferred route to pick up the A64 from A1(M), and go past York, it's a few minutes and miles longer, but presumably on bigger/easier roads than a 'B' road!
The B roads over the Yorkshire Wolds are more than passable towing a caravan. The area is farming country and they are used by farmers towing and HGVs visiting farms every day. The B roads are also generally quiet and very scenic, especially around Sledmere, Rudston (great site there BTW!), Thwing etc.
However for Scarborough use the A64 route, rather than M62. That is a better choice if you are going further south to Bridlington etc.
Update. Hi all so the A1 was rammed 38min detour so decided to go the route I enquired about the B1249 is bumpy in parts also narrow in places but not unmanageable but with the hills etc your up and down the gears hitting the fuel consumption
we must have past you going the opposite direction! we headed from irton to driffield on the 12th sept, at least for you most of it was down hill unlike for us! i never noticed the bumps, guess i was concentrating so much on getting up the hills
