Hi all,
I have a 67 kuga 2.0l and when towing my swift challenger i get an awful whiring noise from somewhere. Cant pinpoint where. It sounds like the noise you hear when blowing into a bottle. Odd i know. Its driving me mad. Ive checked the alko etc and changed friction pads but no joy. Has anyone come across this before ? And ideas ?
Thanks
Is it a continuous sound or intermittent? Does it sound when you’re under acceleration? Braking? Cruise? Driving straight or turning? A specific speed?
Can you identify where the noise comes from?
I’ve heard something similar before and it turned out to be a slipping/worn clutch.
Thanks for the speedy reply. The noise starts about 30 mph and seems constant. If i coast its still there. Louder on acceleration and deceleration. Cant pinpoint it at all. There is no noise when not towing.

This sounds remarkably like the noise that has been bugging us for the last year! We have a 2018 challenger and have investigated all sorts of things but the noise is still there! We’ve just learned to live with it as the caravan service engineer has checked absolutely everything possible with the caravan and tells us that there is nothing wrong with it and the car has been fully serviced and checked and there is nothing wrong with it either.
If you ever find out what it is please please post back here as I would love to know!

Could it just be wind noise over the caravan I only tow a trailer tent so I may be talking rubbish but it is just a thought.
I did wonder that with our caravan but we have had a number of caravans over the years and this is the first time we have had this particular noise. Additionally, we have had this caravan since February 2018 and the noise only started just over a year ago. We also had the Alko squealing brakes issues and we wondered if this new noise was connected to the brakes in some way so we had the brake drums and shoes replaced at our own expense last August as the caravan was out of warranty, but the noise is still there with the new brakes.

To me this sounds like it’s wind noise of a sort, like other posters here. As Rob and Tina point out, check the straps of any towing cover you might have. Another good one is your towing mirrors - these can make a huge racket. Has the noise always been present on your outfit as it’s described, or is this a new development?
As well is two words!
How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.
When we got our new-to-us Challenger, the previous owner had put draft excluder around the panoramic top window; and had put tape over the edges at some point. I’m wondering if that might have been for the same reason. Having dug it all out, I haven’t heard it - maybe the wind pattern from the tow car was different?
Apropos mirrors, Gov.uk says:
“ Towing mirrors
You must have an adequate view of the road behind you.
Fit suitable towing mirrors if your trailer or caravan is wider than the rear of your car.
You can be fined up to £1,000 and get 3 penalty points for towing without proper towing mirrors.”
