If you're going to Harlech I would avoid Barmouth completely. Much better to stay on the A470 and A487 to Maentwrog and then head south into Harlech on the A496.
Merthyr Farm is beautiful and the sunsets are to die for. Just make sure you follow the directions given on their website - even that's uphill and on a mostly single-track road, but it's used daily by tractors, milk tankers etc and perfectly manageable. But do NOT rely on sat nav which will take you on a different route - one that's fine if you don't have a caravan and do have a sense of adventure, but which really is untowable.
