Hello people I own a grand cmax 1.5 diesel 2014 my towing limit is 1200 kg just wondering if anyone on here has had experience towing with this vehicle, we are viewing some caravans today one with a max weigh of 950 kg and also one woth a max weight of 1250 kg , any advice would be great really looking forward to start our caravan journey , reluctant to change car as well , thanks again.
If your vehicle has a max tow of 1200kg why are you looking at a caravan that is 1250,if anything happened I am pretty sure your insurance company wouldn't pay out and you might have to payout for any damage to any 3rd parties, make sure that it is the mtplm that you are looking at and not the Miro as people are very good at only quoting the lower weight.
If your car has a maximum towing weight of 1200 kgs then that is what you can tow. The mtplm of the caravan (or any trailer) is pretty much irrelevent as long as the actual weight you are dragging along is 1200 kgs or less.
If in any doubt, stick the trailer/caravan/horsebox or whatever on a weighbridge and get a printed weight ticket. If its under, you`re OK. If its over you aren`t. Black and white.
So do you need to take it to a weighbridge every time you hitch up loaded ready to go? because it is unusual for your loaded caravan to weigh the same every time and if it ends up as matchsticks on the road your insurance company will work with the figures on the weight plate on the caravan.

Sorry, but that`s absolute drivel.
You can`t break a contract based upon an abstract theory. Unless you are suggesting an insurance company will sweep ip all the `matchsticks` and weigh them all? Then, and only then, there may be a possibility of proving that there was any illegality involved.
The caravan weighs 1030 kg , my max pulling capability is 1200 kg , are you likely to fill it so it will weigh more than 1200 , or is this something you just wouldn’t risk , completer newby to this if honest
By your figures you have 130kg to play with, which is reasonable but once you start adding `stuff` it can soon disappear. There are too many variables to give a definative answer. Will you have a small, light gas bottle or two larger ones? Does the van have a motor mover? Do you end up carrying enough clothes to open a chain of ladies outfitters? SWMBO thinks the maximum weight is a target not a limit.
Thank u this is really helpful , my concern is if we have a bump and they match up that the limit 50 kg over even if we aren’t actually over the limit , the insurance company will do anything not to pay , is this likely to happen do you have to notify insurance company that your towing at all before hand ??
You should notify your insurance company that you have a tow bar fitted to your car, as most companies regard this as a modification. I have never been asked what I am towing and it has never affected the price on the policy.
I think main issue here is that whatever weight you load caravan to is that in the event of a claim your insurers both car & caravan would see car as 1200kg max tow & caravan as 1250kg mtplm ie max loaded weight & refuse any claim on the basis of those figures.
First thing insurers do in event of claim is to look for reasons not to pay & this could be it. Ok you could dispute it & try to prove caravan was legal for car to tow but save yourself the hassle of that & buy a caravan with lower mtplm that car max tow I would.
I totally agree Billy and I don't know why, if you know your max tow is 1200kg you would even think about making it hard for yourself when travelling (being checked over) or if an accident did happen.
