Our car is only 3 years old but problem as above. The dealer took photos and sent them to Hyundai, but they say it's caused by stones. It's not, our neighbour says it's to do with the lacquer flaking off. Has anyone had this problem and what did they do?
Had a Santa Fe myself.
Water gets under the lacquer and causes it to lift and you get a kind of milky effect, well at least I did.
All four wheels replaced under warranty.

How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.
It's common, my Citroen suffers from it, friends Jag suffered terribly from it, and it's NOT the dealer BS of stones that causes it! It's poor quality lacquer and/or application allowing water ingress and corrosion to start under the lacquer which then peels off. Mine started in areas not prone to physical damage, around where the centre badge is fitted on all 4 wheels!
Done nothing about it yet, as only real cure is stripping off old lacquer, refurbishment of wheel to remove corrosion and re-lacquering.
You can try, but don't expect dealer/manufacturer to be sympathetic and do anything. Strictly should be covered by corrosion part of warranty, but will they honour that!!!!
Getting alloys refurbished cost around £60/wheel, worth doing if considering selling a car of any value as likely to be recouped on increased sale value.

Thanks, how old was your car and did you have a problem convincing them?
I think it was a 2012 and it was in the dealer getting something else done under warranty and when I went to pick it up they said(without any prompting)that they had ordered a full set of alloys under warranty.
It was three years old at the time.

Road salt and harsh chemicals ( used at many commercial car washes) is a common cause of lacquer peel.
If you have diamond cut alloys ie, a paint finish and bare aluminium these cost a lot more to refurb as they have to be chemically stripped and put on a lathe. Typically around £125 a corner. Standard alloys are better powder coated as it lasts much longer than paint.

When I worked for Hyundai many years ago wheel corrosion was covered under warranty. Replaced quite a few back then and I'm sure they are still covered under warranty today.
