The prices I see quoted on this thread seem like a fantasy world to me. £40k for a car! I remember when you could buy a row of houses for that! I also remember a brand new Cortina costing £680 on the road. I have an old motoring magazine I found up in my loft with an advert for one.

Also, 45mpg solo and 25mpg towing doesn't sound that good to me, it's a huge difference. My ancient diesel automatic X Trail does around 35mpg solo and possibly 34mpg towing our admittedly lightweight caravan. I am only really guessing at 34mpg as I don't actually notice any difference at all. But then I hardly notice when the caravan's on the back anyway as the performance is virtually the same. The car also has a massive luggage area and a proper spare wheel under that. No, I don't think I'll be changing it anytime soon.

Not sure about prices.
Back in 86 I was getting about 5000 a year after tax. A new car was between 3 and 5k then. In 1993 I was on 9k after tax and a new car cost more than that unless you were getting a Lada. A flat in Edinburgh could be had for about 25k in 86. That was outside my 3x my annual salary in those days.
Car prices have increased less than inflation since the 90s and have got considerably better equipped. When looking at prices, you also have to factor in wages, or lack of them.

Just read on the news about a new phenomenon amongst EV users "Charge Rage".
quote "An increase in electric vehicle (EV) ownership in the UK has reportedly given rise to arguments about charging points etiquette. Rows have reportedly started between electric car drivers over queues and who was waiting in line first. Moto, the UK’s biggest chain of motorway service stations, has been forced to hire marshals at some locations to stand guard and break up rows between drivers over the limited charging points."
Deep Joy.

You can drive smugly past the queues for the charge points in your naughty ICE vehicle. They're not paying VED - yet They will soon.

My wife often can't find a free spot but that doesn't bother her. The free chargers in town don't lock the cable to the charging station so the teens are going around pulling the cables out. That does bother her.
I just go and fill up the bike with petrol every now and again. No queues. If I had an electric motorbike I'd be having to either wait in the cold or sit in a cafe eating cake. It would probably cost me more than petrol for every 100km.

While its clear there are times there are charging queues, its not a regular occurrence. Indeed queues are not something I am seeing at all.
Three weeks ago we were staying on a CL (Buttercup Meadow, Clipston) just outside Market Harborough. On two occasions we stopped for a drink and took advantage of a top up charge at a pub, the Roebuck, on the outskirts. There are three rapid chargers there, and we were the only users, though there were other EVs in the car park.

Right next door is a Tesco fuel station. It had queues 2 or 3 cars deep for each pump on both occasions we visited.

Now I have no doubt the queues would move quickly, but for the cars at the back I am sure there would be a 10 minute wait before getting onto a pump.

Of course, this is only one example, and there are lots of fuel stations round the country with no queues. But the same is true for EV charging. In nearly 2 1/2 years of driving my EV, I have had to queue to charge a handful of times - 3 if I remember correctly - and one of those was while killing time waiting for a train to arrive (we didn’t need the charge there and then, but it was as good a place to wait as any).

I am sure there are exceptional times when chargers are busy, and tempers fray, but its really no different to fuel forecourts, as was demonstrated in 2021.

Unfortunately there are idiots everywhere:-(

The prices vs wages thing is an absolute minefield, and I could probably write a book on it. I retired about 10 years ago on basic state pension plus a tiny pension from a previous job, and I now have considerably less money coming in than I had at the turn of the century. However, if I look at the cost of essentials, (I keep very detailed and accurate records) I find that most essentials have more than doubled in price over that period. I don't keep track of new car prices as I have only ever bought one, so maybe they haven't increased as much as some other things.
