I am looking for a used car .i have been towing with an automatic diesel car . I was looking for something newer but similar.
My son says not to buy diesel because they are going to be banned soon !
The sale of new diesels will be banned in 2035, but that won't affect second hand ones. Where did your son find this information? We have a Hyundai Santa Fe and are very pleased with it.
Diesel cars are not going to been banned, it's just that vehicle manufacturers are no longer producing them and focused more on making electric vehicles instead but diesel cars are going to be on the road for many more years to come. There are still plenty of diesel cars available on the market that are capable of towing a caravan so it's just a matter of making your choice which one suits you. My philosophy is never listen to hear say and try to do your own research and obtain the true facts.
We've just changed our tow car for a new diesel Kia Sorento automatic - it's even better than our previous 6 year old Kia Sorento automatic - smoother gear changes, lots of bells and whistles and better fuel economy, normal driving and when towing. Will hopefully see out our towing days.
We are perfectly happy with our 2008 diesel X Trail automatic and will keep it for as long as we possibly can. It pulls our caravan barely noticing it on the back and fuel consumption stays roughly the same whether towing or not. The caravan is not very heavy though, even though it is a 4 berth. They made them much lighter back in 1992! Must have been well made though or it wouldn't still be around.
Dont worry about diesel,it will still be about in my life time, even if I reach 100. While all the lorries are using Diesel it will be available and probably this decision on Diesel and Petrol cars will be put back when the country is suffering black outs. It the usual thing putting the cart before having a horse, (Barmy Boris).
------------- 2023 Swift Archway Woodford, MK3 Kuga ST Line X 190 ps AWD Auto
Now 52 years Caravanning completed.
We are towing with a self charging hybrid. It's a good towcar, more bhp but a bit less torque than the previous diesel.
Mpg better solo but about the same towing.

Changed from one diesel to another last September. Good bye to unreliable Audi, hello Kia Sorento 2.2 diesel automatic. Just one year old and hugely cheaper than buying it new. I drove in Amsterdam quite a few years ago - not an experience I'd repeat these days - hello park and ride...?
I drive a diesel Volvo XC90. It is brilliant for the job; powerful engine with lots of torque and the car is quite heavy too which means I can tow a larger caravan. Don't forget to outfit match your caravan and tow car to ensure the car can tow your particular caravan safely. I've used towcar dot info for outfit matching in the past.
I tow my Adria with a vw transporter euro 5 diesel, this hype about diesels being banned is just press trash and bigger fools believing it. was in local dealer recently and asked salesman about electric cars and he said the crap about electric cars is embarrassing for them. the dealer was sending back to the manufacturer unsold electric cars because customers want petrol or diesel cars
I tow with a Volvo V60 D4 which is surprisingly heavy little beast and tows 1500 kgs easily (actually better than the BMW 5-series Tourers I had before - which came a a shock). It`s the first diesel auto I`ve towed with and have no problems except for the sat nav which is absolutely atrocious.
I don`t want/need a faux by faux/crossover/SUV or whatever and the V60 fits the bill for being relatively compact but spacious and a decent drive. I think the days of an electric car being capable of towing a moderately heavy caravan over a reasonable distance without frequent charging stops at a price affordable by the average bloke with a family is still a long way off. So diesel or petrol it still is.
