Hi Does anyone tow with a Rover 25. We have one it is a 1.4 petrol. We know we can tow up to a maximum of 1000kg but is it any good at it? Any help gratefully received as trying to find lightweight caravan with all amenities, needle and haystack spring to mind!!
We have been through a similar scenario to you. Last year we decided we wanted a a caravan. At the time, we had an 03 rover 45 1.4. It was a company car so we had no choice over the car and certainly didn't have money for both caravan and new car of our own. We did lots of research and visited a few dealers. Now I appreciate the safety aspect of caravanning etc but one dealer just shrugged us off and said there is no way we would be able to pull a caravan with the 45. We really had our hearts set on caravanning and left this certain place feeling as though we had just been kicked in the stomach. He said we wouldn't get a van within the towing limits and if we did it would be so sluggish and no good at all. However, we pursued the matter and after numerous emails, another local dealer got back to us and helped us out. He said new cars are able to tow, just don't expect miracles. We eventually bought our 97 Sterling europa and yes the car towed fine. Admittedly it wasn't the fastest and looking back now we are pleased we have since had it changed to a 2.0 diesel but I repeat it towed fine and comfortably. We have just been to France and the towing was such a difference with the diesel but with the 1.4 as we had never towed before, had nothing to compare it to but honestly it wasn't painful in the slightest. We are going to Spain in August. I can now appreciate that for that distance the 1.4 would not have been any good but for shorter journeys etc it was absolutely fine. I sound like I am on my soapbox now don't I but I get annoyed when people sl*g off rovers. We love our new one and have also bought a v reg 200 a couple of weeks agoas a runaround. I also get annoyed when you are criticised because you haven't got asuper duper machine for towing. It's not everyone that wants one or who can afford one.
When it states tow up to a max of 1000kgs I would strongly not advise towing around 950-1000kgs but look to the 85% figure. It is not just there for the tow vehicle capability but for your safety and others also, which is of prime importance.
some peoples attitudes are really bad. I am merely stating what happened with us and the fact that we had a rover with a low towing limtit and the same doubts. and as much as anything, it is rover that get a slating. not a really constructive comment from yourself is it ???????????????????
get over it bright, and for the record i did not slate demean or name call rover cars just pointed out a 45 is not a 25, btw rover 820 vitess onwer.
if you clicked on the link you see it points to the actual tow weights of all cars for use of, facts not hearsay.
If you keep within the 85% limit if you are new to towing, have the nose weight correct, everything is in decent condition there shouldn't be too much of a problem. However finding a caravan to suit may be more difficult. Another thing that might be a good idea is to have a physically small caravan to minimise the effects of wind resistance.
The car probably will be sluggish, low mpg but drive carefully steadily and sympathetically and there shouldn't be too much of a problem.
Remember the figures on your handbook are for your particular car, determined by the car manufacturers, they are not some general figure for all cars.
I have an Alfa Romeo 156 2.0 Litre and that says the towing limit is 1300, However I only tow a 900 Disco 200, and on some of those welsh hills even that struggles. So be carefull
Well said PHilDG if only everyone had the fair attitude and honest opinions not like Wildie. We were merely trying to help we had been through a similar sort of scenario and were grateful for any help we could receive when we started out. A blunt comment is just of no use neither is the sharp attitude. So no I wont get over it. Life is too short to be dishing out comments like yours.
you what! didnt see you post a link to kerb weight for towing just a bloody moan why pick on a rover get over it you are your own worst nightmare if you think i was blunt and offensive you are far worst. peroid enuff said begone..
Just to say we had an 1993 Elddis Hurricane XL with hot water, space heater, shower, cassette toilet - and it weighed 850kg (ish) unladen. When we upgraded to a newer van we found that they were generally much heavier - so you might want to look at older caravans? Just an idea for finding a light(er) weight 'van.
