Hi welcome to the site, there aren't many people on at wekends as they seem to be off on meets.

You need to do a check on weights, there have been a lot of threads on this subject you could do a search for them, but you need to take the kerbweight of your car and the maximum laden weight of your caravan. The caravan when loaded should ideally be no more than 85% of the car. They say it can be 100% if you are  experienced  at towing.  What tow car web site do a check for you.

It's only my opinion but a 1.8 petrol engine dosen't sound enough to pull a five berth van, we have a Rover 620 petrol which the o.h. swore blind, whilst chugging up hill at 5 miles per hour that it was up to the job. After getting the Maverick he had to admit defeat you don't know the van is on the back, when on the steepest hill.

I'm sure someone who has a Zafira will perhaps come along.

Hiya' the WILSON's.

Which part of Castleford are you from........I was born and bred in Cas.

With regard to the Zafira 1.8  I can't help, but will be watching the replies with interest as I very nearly bought one myself when I last changed my car.

Good Luck

Les Wilson

Hi The Wilson Gang , you need to find out the kerb weight of your Vauxhall and the the max weight of your caravan , you should be able to find them in either the hand books or actually on the vehicles them selves , there will probably be a plate on the caravan and a sticker on the car somewhere . You may be towing a caravan that is heavier than your car and that's not something you want to be doing .

check the nose weight aswell,

as regards the power of the engine, just use your common sense, if your having rev its nuts off just to keep at a constant 60 then its no good, however if its only struggling a bit you'll be fine, drive sympathetically and smoothly looking well ahead down the road so you can plan what your going to do and adjust your speed to avoid having to slow down excessively, and keep the car well serviced

I tow a Bailey Ranger 510/4 with a Zafira 1.8 Petrol (2002 model). The max weight for the Bailey is 1223 kg and the car kerbweight is 1410kg.  We put the bikes on the car roof, boot full of clothes etc. Whilst the car tows it OK you certainly notice the hills and have to be prepared to use the gearbox to keep momentum - although on the motorway it will cruise at 55/60 mph in fifth without a problem. Also , the mpg drops noticebly with the caravan on  - car solo on a long run = 34mpg , best I've managed with the caravan is about 26mpg - average with the caravan about 23 / 24mpg.
