Sorry to hear your freelander wasn't much use towing up hill.  What made you choose a freelander in the first place.  I am a landie enthusiast but not at all keen on the freelander.  Hubby tows with a 110 defender 2.5 tdi  and has no problems as do our friends who have a very large twin axle.  We haven't as yet towed with my Range Rover classic but I know lots who have them and they are very powerful.  Alot of the caravan mags do articles on tow vechiles which are an interesting read.

No such thing - Freelander has either 1.8 twincam 16 valve petrol (Rover K series), 2 litre diesel, lattery Td4 unit and the 2.5v6 petrol.

I used to have a 1.8 petrol although I never towed with it, it was quite nippy considering its size and weight, I would agree that it would not be as fast as a 2 litre Mondeo - a quick look at power outputs and weights would tell you that.
