Does anyone tow with a 2.0 diesel Vectra. If so do you have any comments/pros/cons about them?
I am thinking about getting a 2001 model 2.0lt diesel estate. Also I wasn't sure if they were different variations of the 2.0 diesel power output.
After my 2.0lt petrol Cavalier I am a bit concerned that it may be a bit underpowered for everyday use, although it would probably be better suited to towing due to the low down torque.
If it is underpowered I could think about getting it re-chipped. I know I could just get the 2.2 diesel unit if i am worried about power, but the car I am thinking about buying has been owned since new by someone I know as is a fairly low mileage example.
you do relised extra power wont give u more tow weight, the limit is set by the total kerb wieght of the car, you cant have a car lighter then the thing its towing, so with that in mind 1400kg max tow weight or there abouts ladened for that car inclueding driver, so 85% of that.
oh if u want to chip consider a total remap instead they seem to be better over all.
what do you want to tow with it?? We ahd a 2L td estate till recently and it was brilliant to drive - loads of oomph day to day, towed a 1000kg folding camper no trouble but we had a 4 berth Bailey wwhich came in at just under the 85% recommendation, it pulled it but I felt it controlled the car, wasn't happy with it at all hence change to folder, everybodies different though and on paper it was safe etc nose weight was very high and imposs. to keep lower

A friend of mine as a 1998 Vectra 2 ltr diesel and he is not happy with it.He has fitted a power chip but still thinks it is not a good tow car. It's too high geared. Also check maximum towing limit.
wildie, thanks anyway, but I wasn't looking at extra power as a means of towing more weight! I'm just thinking if it will have as much ooomph as the Cavalier for everyday driving when not towing.
marynov, I am towing an Avondale Perle Olympus which weighs less than 1000kg fully loaded.
tom a, I had thought that the later diesel unit was different or at least revamped, but I may be wrong.
I'm not a great one to talk to about towing a van then! That would be fine I'm sure weight wise - we could pull up to 1200kg (off top of my head now)by the book and the Bailey was something like 1120kg but I felt like I wasn't incontrol of the whole unit, the caravan was and so it ended, wimp maybe but I love the idea of a caravan......
Mustard the vectra td is about 80bhp but if its the vectra tdi its 100bhp as for day to day running they will be quick enough for running round the town or the open road the TDi is the better all round engine but it you have to keep the revs up or the turbo doesn't cut in
the TD is a low pressure turbo whick means its power is smoother but its a little slower with a van on
running solo they both run and accelerate round about the same gears as the same
BTW I had a 2.0 TD for 2 years my mate had a 2.0TDi at the same time both towing vans of 1250kgs
------------- I might grow old...But!
I'll never grow up!!!

The advised 85% rule for towing with my Vectra 2.0DTi is 1230 kgs, I tow an Elldis Whirlwind with a max of 800kgs, so in my case extra power will give me extra tow weight. I used to tow it with an Astra 1.6, I`m now looking for a van around 1050/1100 kgs to keep me well below the advised 1230 kgs advised weight
