We have just bought a Bailey Ranger 460/2 year 2000. It comes with a bulldog stabiliser. We have not picked it up yet are unsure if it comes with the bracket required for the car. Could anyone tell us where to buy one of these from and how we go about fitting it. (Simple instructions please) :-)

Any caravan dealer or tow bar installer will be able to advise you.

Most of this type of stabiliser need a bracket that is held in position by the two bolts which hold the towball to the tow bar. You may need to purchase longer bolts to accomodate the bracket.

Even though it's simple to do I'd let an expert do it. There are things like the torque settings for the two bolts which you need a torque wrench to get right.

Don't get this right and the bolts could shear then it's goodbye caravan.

Don't want to sound like a prophet of doom but it's best not to take any chances!

Good luck,

Vic

Have a look on the Towsure website, www.ukcampsite.co.uk/redirect.asp?redir=http://www.towsure.com, and then go to the section on towing. They have a selection of stabilisers including a couple of Bulldog ones.

Hopefully your dealer / seller will be able to tell you what model it is.

I am also interested in this subject and what Vic had to say about fitting the stabiliser.  When we are towing our stabiliser makes a dreadful noise and we wonder what causes this.  My husband has checked it but doesn't know enough to stop it creaking.  Any advice would be welcomed.

Hi Frances , here's what you can try , disassemble the stabiliser and clean / rough up the friction disc's and their mating faces , use emery cloth or a medium wet and dry paper . If that doesn't sort it you'll probably need to change the friction disc's . Also check that you have the correct setting for the pressure applied to the disc's ( Note how this is set by using scales on the side of the blade , see Bulldog instructions to see what i'm on about ) If you have a Bulldog stabiliser have a look here for the instructions and click on the stabiliser you have .

Note most blade type stabilisers are pretty similar to Bulldogs 100Q and 200Q so i would have thought the settings are pretty similar too .

Most retailers can sell the spare parts for the stabilisers, even if it is not in their main listing. Make sure you speak to someone who knows what they are talking about - there are different car plates for flanged towbars, swan-necked bars, and different models and makes of stabilisers.
