Hi there, I have been on here before about the Vectra and the Primera for towing. We are now swaying towards the Ford Focus C-Max 2.0 tdci 136bhp. If anyone tows with one of these, I would be grateful if you could let me know what you think and how they handle when towing. I don't have a caravan yet, but will be looking to get one early next year. Hoping to get something like a Swift Challenger 5 berth, so not too heavy.

Any help would be very much appreciated

Cheers and roll on next year

I don't drive one, but I would wonder about the weight, seeing as it is based on a standard Focus. the engine should be ok.

HI Degsy

I have the C Max 1.8 and it pulls our caravan without any problems at all. ok so I only get 21 mpg but I can live with that.

ok  hi,  ive got a C-max ghia 2.0 tdci

I bought this as a tow car and i can honestly say this is the best vehicle i have ever owned i would not change this car for anything, towing i can get around 30-35 to the gallon and without the caravan  over 50mpg if you can go for the Ghia as you will get cruise control very handy when towing.

on the towing front  it will pull up to 1450 kg at 85% of the vehicle weight,  and it does say in the hand book this is a maximum , and we are just below that with our van an abbey gts vogue 417 the car is very powerful with this van on the back it dosent struggle on hills infact it is a matter of letting off the throttle........ the car is a nice drive and handles very well when towing we test drove a lot of new cars and ive got to say this was the one for us ,  hope this helps all i can say is i will be getting another one of these when ive had a couple of years out of this one , check the weights with the ford dealer when you buy as im only stating the situation for my vehicle and there is a lot of variation on the different models,

cheers  andrew

Well, its a year on from my original post. I eventually bought the C-Max Tdci Ghia and cannot fault it for towing. Totally agree with everything 'Bunter' had to say. On my last towing journey, we averaged 35 mpg going from Durham to Lincolnshire. Different story on the way back as we had a canny headwind and only averaged 27mpg. All in all though, chuffed. Cheers for the advice Andrew

I must admit, I do like the look of the S-Max but probs gonna be out of our price range for a few years yet!   C-Max or the S-Max, I would recommend the Diesel. Good luck with whichever one you choose Als.

I use the Focus too. For me it is the ideal dual car, for general purpose, and the towing 5/6 times aeach year. Goes nicely for all of my purposes. Nice ride, it aims well, and excellent stopping. Will definitely replace with another Focus, when the time comes. Might go from 1.8 to 2.0 litre.

We have a focus estate petrol (not for towing) and the wife loves it, but it is coming time to change and we are undecided as to a replacement.

Hi I bought my ford focus C max 2.o litre tdi.  In february 2005. Its a fantastic car.  Great for towing.  We go away on weekends at least once a month and have had at least four full weeks away.  I tow a swift lifestyle 480 (2 berth) but we have had up to five people in car going to wales and cornwall. I have never had any problems with this car and is excellent on the hills, as previously said you have to let up on the pedal as it take hills in its stride.

I would highly recommend this car.

Good luck and happy caravanning

Kathy
