We are thinking of going from a large single axle van to a double axle van. What I would like to know are the main differences (apart from 2 extra wheels!!!), as regards towing, handling, access to sites etc.....
I would really appreciate your assistance and guidance!
Should be more stable on the road .... but almost impossible to manhandle wothout a mover. More difficult to level side to side to.
Hi Phil
Agreed but oh! so much more comfortable. You will need a good tugger to pull it though. More expensive on ferries etc. A Ford Galaxy is too light a vehicle.
Hi, i did the swap last year, I find the twin wheel a lot more stable when towing and find it handles really well cornering plus no real swaying when being overtaken by larger vehicles (but i do have a heavy tug), I don't find it a problem when manouvering if hitched because if you take your time anything will move correctly and leveling is not really a problem, but forget trying to move it on your own....can you borrow one to try towing before you decide? I know I wouldn't want to swap back
Cheers Mark

Not impossible to man-handle on site but difficult unless you have plenty of help. Our experience has been that if you do need any extra manpower there`s always plenty of willing volunteers and it`s a great way to make new friends.
hi we have just swapped our single axle to a twin and the difference is so much better. Although we havent taken it out yet when towing it home there was so much difference in the way that it handles both round the country bends and the open road, I was wondering about the way that it would handle when being over taken by something larger than us so all your comments have helped me thank you. We have a buccaneer and a shogun i think that this outfit will work well, so overall i would say yes go for it the space is great, just make sure that you get the right set up and away you go.
We have just changed ours from a single to twin axle. We brought is home yesterday and towed beautifully as we expected, having previously owned a smaller twin axle. It is of course more difficult to manage off the towing vehicle, but I think the benefits of the extra space certainly compensates for it. You will of course need a large towing vehicle, and have found our outfit works perfectly. Good luck!!
Hi we have one too and changed from a single, Hubby has said it tows better and is easy on road etc we do have a motor mover that came with it, the van was less than a Year old when we bought it and when we were looking that was one of the spec's we wanted as a dealer had already told him that you really do need a motor mover with a twin axle, my Husband has colitis and sometimes it plays up with tummy pain so I didn't really want him trying to man handle and risk pulling himself.
On NY Eve the battery had gone flat and we didn't go far enough to charge it so we had to pull it about and I must admit I am glad we have the mover.
Other than that we love it, loads of room etc no other problems with siting it, but I noticed somewhere else that someone had posted about not good on hillsides etc we haven't tried that one yet.

If you can, take a really good jack with you (yes weight can be an issue I know) and several small planks (big enough to fit under both wheels) and chocs etc. that way levelling is OK almost where ever you are sited.
we have 2 twin axle's and yes they can be a bit of a pain to level on a bumpy rally field apart from that no problems. We always asked when booking if they could fit a long out fit in and had room to get in and out of the site
