hello Paul and welcome to UKCS.
Firstly you need to establish the exact kerbweight of you Dageham Dustbin. I've just looked up a '98 1.8 16v LX 5dr Focus and it shows a kerbweight of 1129kgs. I should think yours has got to be something in that order and if so, basically restricts your towability to something like 1000kg max. That means when the van is fully loaded, ready to hit the road, it shouldn't weigh much more than 1000kgs. This is known as the MTPLM which means Maximum Technically Permissible Laden Mass The MIRO (Mass in Running Order), which is the actual weight of the van itself prior to you loading up your awning, clothes, bikes, food and any other typical caravanning paraphernalia.
So bearing these figures in mind it ties you down to a 2-berth caravan and as a for instance, something like The Dart which as you can see fits the criteria. http://www.caravansinswansea.com/avondale_dart.htm
I know it's a new one but I'm just using it as an example. Your first criteria when chosing any van is to make sure your vehicle is legally and safely able to tow it otherwise you end up with a van you can't tow or else you then have the added expense of having to change your towcar too.
Initially, determine your maximum budget, the exact kerbweight of your car and then start your search for a caravan meeting the requirements above. As you are restricted to a lightweight 2-berth van you may find your choices are a bit limited but as you ascend the 3,4,5 and 6-berth ladder you'll see there are many different styles of caravan in each class but the final choice is down to the individual.
Then finally I suppose there's the question of whether you buy from a dealer or go private. Again, there are pros and cons for both. You should get some sort of a warranty from a reputable dealer but then you might expect to pay a bit less buying a van privately. Either way don't pay the asking price, there's always room to haggle. Best of luck and I hope you enjoy your new way of life.
