We own an Audi A4 Avant 1.9TDI and it tows very well.Done 240 mile to the Peak District and used £40 worth of diesel which is not  bad pulling a caravan. If the caravan had not been on the back it would have cost me about £24. I had a Ford Mondeo 2.0TDI before the Audi and must say the Audi is a better car. Fuel economy is very good.

I would jolly well hope so! The Audi is significantly more expensive than the Mondeo.........isn't it?

You don't say which Audi you are considering. If it's an A4 then 1.9 is powerful enough, but a bit noisy. I have some colleagues who have got the latest version with 2.0 TDi which is much better if you can find one. If you are considering an A6 with the 1.9 then I've heard some people say that it's a bit underpowered, although the A6 itself is a fine car. I have an A6 Avant 2.7 TDi which tows like a dream, and has been faultless. Whichever engine you go for it is also very stable and comfortable when towing.

I got a brand new A3 Sportback 1.9tdi(5 door) and am getting towbar fitted on Saturday ready for our trip out at the end of September - so let's see how well it does pulling our 4 berth 1992 Fleetwood Garland - should be make a better job than our previous Zafira 1.6 petrol although that pulled suprisingly well!  Then again, we are not looking for speed we just want to arrive safely!

Hi,

My wife has an audi A6 avant 1.9TDI (110 bhp) and we tow an Abbey GTS Vogue 417 with it.

I have to admit that when we first bought the caravan I was a bit concerned over the weight and what it would do to the fuel consumption. On a solo run the car will do around 55mpg and I was suprised to find that this only dropped to around 35mpg. we have made several trips and this seems pretty consistent.

It's not the most powerful car but the torque is so good that it'll cruise nicely on the motorways and we haven't had much problem keeping up with traffic on main roads either although hills tend to slow it down though!

I would not like to tow anything much heavier than our caravan (mptlm 1417kg) with it as I think it would start pushing the engine a tad and so would look for a larger capacity motor although I think you would lose something on the fuel consumption figures.

Hope this helps

Steve
