HI there,
I am looking for a company car to replace my 1800 vectra hatch. I have a Elldis Wisp MPTL of 1150 from memory (currently in store!) & my company wants me to have a diesel & an estate to boot.
But with the money they are giving me & the tax I want to pay, I am a little limited.
I fancy the Peugot 307SW as it is very flexible & heavy enough to pull the van - but also OK to spend all day on the motorway doing my reps job.
Two engines have they:
a 1.6 L which pulls 110BHP (really!) & a 2.0L which pulls 136BHP.
However the towing limit for the 1.6 is only 1000Kg so that is out of the list. The 2.0 can pul up to 1400Kg but allegedly has very high gearing & one report stated that this makes it more or less unsuitable for pulling vans (35mph/1000rpm in top).
Anyone any experience of this car pulling or not pulling a light van? I would appreciate any comments!
Cheers
Frank JB

Hi David. I got the towing weights here: Maximum Braked Towing Weight: 1000 (110) 1400 (136) - quoted at http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/road_tests/index.htm?id=157 Obviously can't believe everything on the web!
I realise that the torque is quite high but due to the high gearing, pulling may still be a problem 70mph at 2000rpm in top? So 60 is less than that. Peak torque is quoted at 400RPM..Guess I will be running around in 3,4 & possibly 5th gear most of the time rather than 6th.
What difference would the 60Kg towball weight make to stability - I tend to run my Elddis at about 75Kg at the moment?
And Ali - no I haven't. I will have a look - thanks!

Frank,
I know Honest John is well respected, but as I said previously, I got my figures at Peugeot.co.uk; check it out yourself. Going by the official figures, the 1.6(110) should be ok for you, and would resolve your high gearing concerns, although there's a fair old difference in torque between the 2 engines.
If you have time before having to make the decision, you could post at the following forums, which have specialist Peugeot sections.

------------- David.
I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure!
