We are looking at buying another tow car and have a max budget of £2200 - not alot but thats all there is.

Your opinions as to what to go for / avoid would be great and ideally a diesel for obvious reasons, estate and big enought to pull a van with a max MPTLM of 1250kg, MIRO 935Kg - we never fully load btw.

When buying used, what sort of miles would you say should be absolute maximum for a diesel engine? and would you avoid one that has already had a life as a towcar?

Thanks

Richard

Your tow car should have its weights under the bonnet on its vin plate

Diesel is the way to go. You need to get the more recent engines though otherwise they can be underpowered. Different makers came out with them at different times. You have enough cash for one. Fords tdci engines are good. Not sure how long they have been putting them in their cars, but might be in reach. My last car would have been perfect for you. Audi A4 1.9 tdi. p/r reg about in price range you are looking. Bombproof engines and gearbox. Skoda and VW use exactly the same engines. VW a bit cheaper, Skoda even cheaper, and built a lot better than before taken over by VW. VW Passat well within price range as well. These engines should last at least 200,000 miles or more if serviced correct, so look for a motor with FSH. Also do approx 53 mpg.
