Just returned from a great week in the lakes. Travelling home on the M6 the back of the van 'wobbled' slightly, hubby assured me it was ok just a little windy.I am quite a nervous passenger and the rest of the journey home was an anxious one! Anyone else experienced this...is it the wind or could it be the way the van is packed...please advice as i am already dreading the next trip out...thanks.
Does it wobble side to side or front to back?? Get your other half to check the tyres on the van. There might be a bulge in the tread also check the tow socket on the van for loose bolts.
Check that when you load up the heavier items are placed across the axel and not placed in front or back of van.
------------- I'm just a slave to the outdoor life!!!!!!!
it just wobbled side to side very slightly (but enough to scare me!)...the van had just had its first service the week before so i presume the tyres were ok.
Even with a stabliser fitted if a high sided vehicles pass you or its a open wind part of the road all van wobble a little or even a lot if badly loaded. If its only a slight wobble and your hubby feels safe driving and its not pulling the car it will be OK. When you do get a serious snake on you will BOTH know.
I am sure that if you took on a wobble, which then corrected and did not return, it was probably road conditions, a gust of wind across your path, or the passing of another vehicle. If you follow the packing advice (all contents low down over and just forward ofthe axle, tyres and wheels on correctly etc) you wont normally get wobbles. Nose weight must also be around the advised limit for your unit. I am sure there are lots of tips on this site which, if followed, will help you tow safely. Just enjoy. Happy camping.
Thanks for all the advice..we have a new van 2005 with stabalizer fiited..it also has room to fit a bike at the rear of the van which is what we do , the other two bikes are placed just forward of the axle.We have always packed it like this so i,m hoping it was just the wind..i do feel nervous at the least wobble because 4 years ago due to tyre pressure we had a serious snake and jack knifed(if thats how you spell it)..what a horrendous experience that was!
hiya i know how you feel everytime we take the van out and we gat a wobble i always say to neil thats it the vans going we are getting a tent instead but he says its fine not to worry , i dont drive so i think that makes it worse but i do really panic and have palpitations im so releived when we get to our destination but i think the condition of some off the roads dosnt help hitting a pothole gives us a nasty wobble , i tell neil to slow down but he says you have to do more than 20miles an hour on the motorway but id rather go slow and get there in one piece
Lol I can identify with you Julie, scares the life out of me. Other half aint bothered, anyway taken a seasonal pitch so dont have to worry now, despite never having had a bad experience. Might even sell my beloved Kia now.

Organised people are just too lazy to look for things.
Hi cathycu, Which site were you on?, we've also had brilliant five days in the lakes at park coppice cc site, only problem was the pesky midges!!,we also got a slight wobble on but oh asleep at the time.I was behind a lorry in the middle lane overtaking two lorries who were on the inside lane when my outfit wobbled but not too badly, didn't happen again though thankfully.I notice you have a bike stored at the back of the van, maybe an idea to move it further forward if possible and check the nose weight, should be about 7% of your laden weight i think.
We had a unit snake on us a long time ago and you never forget it so i know how you feel but if your husband is happy then i am sure you are like me and over react to every bump and sway so my advice is... a dose of vodka, wine or whisky (or all three might make you feel a bit sick though but at least you will have something else to worry about) one hour before you leave. If your tee total than ipod on and relaxation music and let him get on with towing it.. or sit in the back and sleep..
Seriously though if you have always packed the unit the same and you have checked your nose weight at the start then it was probably as people have said above.
good luck i will be thinking of you..glad i am not the only nervous passenger!!! our poor husbands must go through hell LOL !
