Hiya
Ours is a 1997 R reg 2.5 Tdi and, driven carefully we've had nearly 500 miles on a tank. The engine braking is phenomenal, so much so that we've more than once nearly been rear-ended because I just forget to brake (and some muppet was driving too close) - there's no need to so I just don't - the engine does it for me!
Not sure what the return is when towing - we're very lazy tourers and leave our van on site over the summer.
A friend has a T plate Freelander and she's amazed at how much better the Discovery pulls away from junctions and up hills - the Freelander doesn't seem to be much of a climber. The Disco just powers along though, like Viffer97 says, you just need to drop a gear or two to help it along. I don't find the gear changing excessive, though and it can easily keep up with any speed limit. I love my Disco and would recommend one to anyone - good luck if you go for one stiggles.
