The Discovery has a large tank, if its reading below a quarter  then it can cost £70.00 to fill it back up,

Solo day to day driving I can get 450miles (30 mpg) from a tank full, and a little bit more on a run, 35mpg is quite achievable.

Towing a 1500kgs caravan this figure reduces to around 350 miles for my £70.00. ( 22 t o 24 mpg approx)

I have had both a 200Tdi which gave us 28-32 solo and about 24-25 towing and we also had a R reg 300Tdi which gave us slightly less but it had a cat on the exhaust which took about 10% of the power from the engine and I found that I was constantly changing gear and on some hills it realy struggled with the caravan on much to the extent that we got rid of it. The only problem was that I miss the economy as the Pajero that we now have does about 23-25 solo and 18 towing but it is a hell of a better and more comfortable vehicle and it's an automatic- no changing gear!!!

I would back up what Irogers has said.

'97 300tdi Auto
450 miles to a tank solo approx
350 miles with a 1200kgs single axle

Have just changed to a heavier twin axle, so it wil be interesting to see if consumption changes much.

I have found that as long as you stick to the limits no problems, just need the kick-down on the steeper hills, if you don't get the run-up.

Hi there  I have a TD5 GS and I can get Between 35-40 (Mototway) 30mpg around the doors. If you drive sensible. Do not get to heavy on the trottle. When Towing I keep to a steady 50-55mph. I have put Veggie oil in mine before from asda and it works ok.

Hiya

Ours is a 1997 R reg 2.5 Tdi and, driven carefully we've had nearly 500 miles on a tank.  The engine braking is phenomenal, so much so that we've more than once nearly been rear-ended  [:x] because I just forget to brake (and some muppet was driving too close) - there's no need to so I just don't - the engine does it for me!

Not sure what the return is when towing - we're very lazy tourers and leave our van on site over the summer.

A friend has a T plate Freelander and she's amazed at how much better the Discovery pulls away from junctions and up hills - the Freelander doesn't seem to be much of a climber.  The Disco just powers along though, like Viffer97 says, you just need to drop a gear or two to help it along.  I don't find the gear changing excessive, though and it can easily keep up with any speed limit.  I love my Disco [8D]  and would recommend one to anyone - good luck if you go for one stiggles.
