I knew it was regulation 33 of somthing. I just a lorry driver. I bet if you asked a police man he wouldent know exactly either. Thanks for all the replies. So there you have it and unless youve got xray vision with eyes in the back of your head, stop breaking the law, risking yours and everybody elses lives. Get some proper towing mirrors especially you 4X4 drivers no mirrors on the motorway doing 49, 44,58, 65, 49 mph. When Im doing a constant 56 mph about to overtake makes me feel much safer knowing you can actually see me. And while Im ranting get cruise control. Save petrol or diesel and get where your going faster. I think its much safer if everyone speed is constant. Its standard on a lot of cars so if youve got it use it.
Ah! everyone doing the same MPH, then everywhere would be like the A1 where you have to sit for 5 miles whilst the LGV's overtake because the one being overtaken won't ease off a little to let the other in. No thanks. With the last van I had I only used an offside mirror as the van was narrow enough for me to see down both sides with the normal car mirrors, and I used the offside one to keep an eye on anything large approaching.
No not everone doing the same speed, but driving at more consistent speed. Its terrible overtaking someone doing 45 finding you cant pull in as they are now up your inside going faster. At leat I will be able to see them as Im not breaking the law. Ive got mirrors on both sides.
I use the clip on type mirrors that stay on with rubber bands and they ok to a certain extent at slow speeds but they do vibrate a lot, does anyone have any mirrors that dont vibrate a lot ??
The suck it & see mirrors have been used recently by friends who report they were very good, but they are expensive.
Just thought I'd mention that there are still blind spots when you have towing mirrors fitted. I nearly got caught out a couple of years ago, even though I had towing mirrors on. I started to change lanes on the motorway and there was a car in my blindspot that I couldn't see in any of the mirrors - luckily he hooted his horn and I pulled back over till he had gone past. So it is always worth a shoulder check when changing lanes.
