Do the friction pads need replacing?

In some cases roughing the stabiliser pads up with some very coarse sand paper will help although its perfectly normal for stabilisers to creak a bit at slow speeds

The last time I had this problem was ages ago.  I cured it by a quick rinse of the dust out of the hitch with a hose.  We had been on a very dusty site before it started.

Here is the AKS support info link

We had a similar problem. Used the stabiliser clinic who did a great job replacing pads and setting up our Alko Hitch (and they gave us coffee while we waited).

We clean the towball with fine emery paper and ensure the inside of the hitch is dust free. Haven't tried the hose, but sounds like a good idea.

Seems to have been OK since but as previously posted slight creaking appears to be normal as no grease betweent he two surfaces. I think it's just more noticeable at low speeds.

While on the subject of Alko stabilisers, has anybody had problems disengaging the hitch from the towball.  Since I changed the car and had a new towbar fitted (with the correct Alko towball) hitching up is no problem but disengaging (lifting up the handle to release the 'clamp' from the towball), is getting to be difficult and I have to manoever the car forward and back an inch or two before it eventually releases.

We soak ours too - I know brake linings work beter dry ('cos thats what they are after all)  but it stops the creaking.

Ref to Arturo above,

our newer Lunar Delta has an Alko hitch and I have also noted that it seems to get stuck on the towball and need to move the towcar around to get ti to release easily. Maybe the friction pads or something needs adjusting?

Hi Viffer.

It only happens on the Citroen, it was fine on the Mondeo.  I've had the pads checked when the van was serviced and they were said to be OK.  Just one of those things I suppose.  At least it's less likely to come unhitched by accident!!

Hmm, maybe it is to do with the way the hitch lines up with the towball then? does your Citroen sit lower than the Mondeo at rest?

I haven't used an Alko hitch before, but use a Discovery to tow the Lunar, so maybe it is the height?

Regards, Kevin.

Our stabiliser squeaks and groans too and the friction pads have just been replaced
We also have trouble getting the van off the car, sometimes having to stand on the back of the car and bouncing to release it !!!

My old stabiliser has creaked & groaned for years, I've always thought that as long as it's doing that it must be working. Problem is I'm starting to creak & groan now to, I don't suppose the stabiliser clinic could sort me out though.

I thought i had the same problem when i bought a new van a couple of years ago but then remembered that i had my old ALCO stabliliser fitted to my new van and it never creaked & groaned when on my old van.So i had it checked out on its next service and was informed by the Dealer that its not the stabiliser that creaks but the van axle and is quite common on vans because of  the rubberised axle.I surgest you do what i did and rock the van back and forth sideways when not hitched up to the car and if it creaks & groans like mine does thats your problem not the stabiliser.

Cheers
