We're about to venture off to the New Forest for a while.

I'm goint to replace the stabilizer bracket on the caravan before I go as it looks 'bent' and the blade sometimes jumps out of the bracket on a hard left turn.

The existing bracket is held onto the a frame by a clamp and it's the clamp that is causing the 'bend'. Can the bracket be fixed directly onto the a frame? I recall reading somewhere that this may be a problem.

The caravan in question is a 1991 Elddis Tornado.

Thanks,

David

Rule No 1 never drill holes in the frame you could severely weaken the frame. The bracket you mention, have a look on Towsure you can get spares. If the bracket is mounted on the left hand side of the van looking at the front then there is a fair bet that is too far along the A frame - so when you turn left you run out of blade and it comes off - so move it forward an inch or so. You could take off the bracket and straighten it get some new bolts and refix that should sort it out. Good luck

My understanding is that you should never drill additional holes through the chassis - apparently doing so weakens it. Perhaps it would be worth buying some new clamp bolts with locking washers and fitting those.

Could also be the setting of the actual stabiliser itself. Have you checked that recently? IIRC it should be between 80 and 90 lbs. You can do it quite easily by pulling the leaf out at a right-angle with the back of the car and then pressing a set of bathroom scales against it. You need someone with you to read the scales as you push. If it takes more than 90 lbs of push to move it, it's too tight. You adjust the pressure by loosening the centre bolt, and then re-tightening when you've achieved the correct setting.

Not exactly Einstein but this worked for me for years.

Cheers!

Vic
