i might have been hit on the head but if you read any owners review sites Jap crap costs less to maintian and as less breakdowns i would looking to get a range rover but having read about them on the internet just feel the cheapness of buying isn't worth the repair costs over the 3 years

For what its worth I have a 300Tdi disco (mk1) and it feels fine towing with no snaking or instability. 

However can I point any Disco owners in the direction of this thread as I'm looking for advice myself

As a driver of a '96 mk1 Disco I can agree that they are not limo's or Ferraris but if you drive them as a heavy 4x4 on a road then they will behave.Anticpate the road ahead, set the car up for a bend (left for right,right for left etc). or hazard. If the driver/car is ready for a bend or change in position or speed then it shouldn't upset the balance of the car. It's all about planning your driving and setting the vehicle up for the approaching hazards,in a Land rover at least you can see over most hedges. for advice on how to drive safley (which will also help with economy) have a look at the Police Roadcraft Book.

With regard to weaving although my car is much heavier than my van's all up weight I still use a Snakemaster, I load a fair bit of heavy kit in the fornt of the van and the rear of the car and have never had a snaking problem with the Disco

Choose Japanese carefully.  Only the land cruiser can be classed as good a car as discos and range rovers and they are expensive.  Some japanese cars are well known to have some major reliability problems with turbos blowing etc.  Nearly all of them are an offence to good taste visually - looking cheap and nasty, appealing only to chavs

"Good" is a meaningless word, unless you add context.  

In the parts of the world where your life might depend on your vehicle - such as Australia and Africa, the Landcruiser is the most common due to its outstanding toughness, reliability and the ready availability of spares.  Its main competitor in those areas is the Nissan Patrol - not the Disco or Range Rover, which are less common, comparitively expensive and unreliable.

The latest Disco and Range Rover are plusher, more sophisticated and better onroad solo than most/all of the Japanese and other far eastern offroaders.  They are infinitely preferable as "footballers wife" cars too - I doubt that any of them drive a Patrol or Hyundai Terracan, for example.

I don't think a case can be made for Land Rovers of any kind being better towcars than many of the far eastern alternatives.   There's not a hairs breadth in offroad competence between the Disco, Range Rover, Landcruiser and Nissan Patrol over very difficult ground  - though the Defender 90 is definitely better and most or all of the other Japanese and other far eastern "offroaders" are worse or much worse.

Discos and Range Rovers are definitely better at being expensive - and at being made in the UK (at the moment).  They are also way better at having green oval badges on them, which is all that seems to matter for many of their owners.

Don't forget most of the 4x4s in Africa have been donated as part of overseas aid packages.  When foreign cars win motoring awards its because they are the best cars, but when british built cars win awards why is it different? 

Does your life depend on your patrol?  For most people their car is used mainly for day to day driving around.  I quite like x-trails but I would be hesitant to get one because of stories about blown turbos.

I have a 97plate 300tdi which has to earn its living.It has an adjustable draw bar which I alter depending on what I am towing.It makes a lot of difference.Slightly higher for very heavy loads lower for lighter.The only "mods" I have done is to fit gas shocks to the rear but only because they last longer than the oil ones.Keep an eye on tyre pressures even a few psi difference makes a difference on heavy loads.

I agree with the poster who said people buy them and try to drive them like normal cars.They have a higher center of gravity and will not hug the road and corner like an average family saloon car.Nor are they invincble towing machines capable of dragging anything at any speed.(but they do do it better than anything else)
