hello everyone. myself and my wife are venturing from tent to caravan and i am in need of some advice please.
we are about to purchase a caravan (2berth) for us and our 18month boy and i am stuck on what is best to tow with.
my question is this.
1. if you had £6500 to spend, what would be the best vehicle to tow a 2, and maybe a 4 berth van with. i know there is a lot to choose from, but being new to towing im open to advice, ie 4wd or good estate car.

thanks for any advice offered on this, i know it leaves a lot of scope, but i guess i will see a common reply. at the moment i have a golf, so i know it will tow the caravan but i am looking for something that will cope a bit easier.

Welcome. Thats a difficult question. With that sort of money you have a fairly wide choice. You need to know the weight of the van you will tow and then what the vehicle you choose is capable of towing.

Thats a very simple start, it's more complicated than that. Have a look at this site for a start.

Hi there and welcome, if you go back a few pages and hunt around you will find lots of threads on cars.  Generally, the mondeo TDCIs seem to be favoured, along with Sedonas, Omegas a Vectras.

Diesels have more torque than petrols so tend to make good towcars because they have more grunt, in simple terms, and of course the fuel economy is usually a little better!

Oh and Octavias and Passats too, as you already have a golf familiar territory huh!  If you go to whattowcar.co.uk you can see if your desired car and van are a good match.  For that sort of money you could also get a Honda CRV which again are very reliable but not the heaviest of vehicles.   Personally I adore Nissans and I believe the Almera Tino diesel and Primera diesel are also good in their 2.2 dci guise.

I am just buying a 2 litre petrol Primera and whilst our van is sited it will tow it if needs be.  Things to look out for are kerbweights and noseweights.  If you go to the caravan club website there are lots of info sheets on there to help you too.

By the way, my Primera is on a 52 plate, top spec T Spec version for £6,500!!  They do the diesel in this version too for about £800 - £1000 more.  It has dvd sat nav, reversing camera, cruise control etc etc.
