I have 2 cars. A Scenic 1.4 16v and a Fiesta Zetec-S 1.6 16v. Which one would be the best for towing a caravan and how big a caravan would people recommend for the size of vehicles I have?

TIA

Alan

Someone will come along before long and tell you. I doubt very much if you will find anything suitable. Both vehicles are low powered and light.

This is a good place to start.

Those were my thoughts, but I'm not in a position to change either one just yet. Thats why I'm asking which would be best.

Thanks for the reply.

you dont say what year the cars are, but the max tow for the Mk6 fiesta 1.6 zetecS seems to be 900kgs, the gross vehicle being 1110Kgs, the scenic 1.6 is 1300kgs according to a manual, but i cant find the weights for the 1.4, although it could well be lower, and i dont think it would be up to towing much, my 1.6 multi struggles when it comes top hills with only 900Kgs on the back.

so a fiest the 900Kgs is only 81% but is only a small van

The scenic is regarded as a small engine for the size of vehicle, hence the 1.4 is no longer offered, and i think it would struggle

found this page, the 1.4 only gets a 1.5 stars

http://www.whattowcar.com/review.php?typeauto=3&merk_x=Renault&serie=Sc%E9nic

Im afraid it doesnt look too good, but it depends upon what you need from a van, some slightly older 2 berths would be OK, but much more and its pushing it

edited cos the link dunt work with the comparison,

look at the compare two towcars section, then you can put in the type of van you are looking for and compare both your motors at the same time

I've just had a look at that. I had to recalculate the power in bhp because it doesn't list the spec of my car. If I have a total tow of 900kg ??? is this a small caravan?? It says that although I'm at 89% I should not have any problems. Can someone check it. My Fiesta is the "sporty" model and produces 110 bhp and has 195/50/15 tyres on it.

if you do decide to tow with 1 of them  then i would use the renault  and the caravan really depends on your needs  2 berth 4 berth ect

if you can go for an older model van as they tend to be the lighter

i used to have a compass echo 440 4 berth and that was 850kg fully laden  i towed that with a 1.4 fiat brava 5 door

Thanks for all the replies. My uncle who is into caravanning has said that the Renault will pull a small van quite easily because the engines are very torquey (sp) When I say small I mean around 850 - 900 kg

You could try a folding caravan they are light and are easily towed by a smaller car
