I am considering buying a caravan, but as I have never owned one before I need some advice on which towbar to fit to a Vauxhall Astra Hatchback (05).  Can anyone help?

Hi and welcome,

As all towbars for vehicles the age of yours have to be type approved there should in theory be little or no difference between brands. So I would suggest you ring around and see what sort of deal you can get. If you know someone that can fit it for you then you will probably save £90 - £100.
As for detachable or fixed, that is usually down to personal choice and whether or not you think that you will keep banging your shins when loading the car.
As you are expecting to use it for a caravan then I would suggest that you get double electrics (i.e. both black 12N and grey 12S sockets) fitted as it is more expensive to have the 12S (used for reversing / fog lights, battery charging and fridge power) added later.

Hope that's helped.

Mike

a friend of mine was quoted 450 quid by his Kia dealer. He contacted one via yell.co.uk who is a mobile towbar fitter, cost 245 quid all in. the guy told him that he gets all the fitting jobs for the dealer he had the £450 quote from.... just shows what their mark up is!!!! shop around

I have bought two towbars from a chap on e-bay towbarman, £72.00 for an 04 plate Astra est (twin electrics). and £116.00 for a swan neck for a Grand Scenic (single electrics) Service was excellent, well recommended.
